Preparing for BCG

Preparing for BCG was created by RHWilgus
I have only been here for just over a month since I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. After the first procedure, the biopsy revealed non invasive type. The second procedure was done just two weeks ago and now we are preparing for 6 weeks of BCG treatments. I was in the Army for 22 years and I had to explain to my Army friends that BCG is not Birth Control Glasses which are issued to new soldiers. I guess I could use any encouraging remarks as I start these treatments. What should I look out for and what are some after effects.

Welcome, but as said for everyone here, sorry you have to be here, but you will find a lot of support and also information from all of us that have been exactly where you are right now.
I have had 24 BCG washes, and so far, six years cancer free. I say "so far" because bladder cancer has a reputation of coming back.
You doctor will tell you what to expect, and for most side effects, frequent urination, to some burning etc., there is help to get over the side effects.
Drink plenty of water after the BCG, stay focused on the "big picture"and keep a positive attitude.
Good Luck, and please share your journey with us.

Thanks for being here. We are happy to help.

IF it will ease your anxiety any........ I was sooooooo hoping to be a candidate for BCG. I was so convinced I would have BCG treatments that when I woke up from my second TURB, I told my wife I was going to have BCG. She said "Nope. You are coming back in 5 days for a Bladder Removal."

But Seriously. I hope you are happy that they caught it early. You are going to live a long time and hopefully become an advocate on this site.
Just the fact that you are going to have BCG, means you have cancer. And you are going to be a survivor.

Good Luck

First, thanks for your Army service! As you have and will read there are many survivors here. I am 5 1/2 years out free from this disease. Pay attention to your URO, a second TURB is normal (I originally thought it meant he goofed up but, not at all) and BCG will likely destroy it from coming back. The follow ups are essential to stay on top of it should it come back. Keep postig and someone will have a helpful note or answer.

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

How will I feel after my treatment? The receptionist said it would be okay for me to come alone and drive home afterwards. I am taking my wife along as my driver. It's not that I don't trust a receptionist, I just want to be careful. Any suggestions?

My husband drove the first round, but after that I drove myself . I think it is a good
idea to have someone with you at first, just to see how your bladder does with BCG, and to listen to the nurse for any helpful hints. Four ears are always
better than two:)
