Hello Anne... Welcome to our forum. I'm very sorry to hear of your health issues and recent BC diagnosis.

Did your uro say why he did not concur with the PET scan? If two specialists mentioned it for your other conditions, you might consider seeking the opinion of a second urologist. Not all uros are at the top of their class and if it makes you feel uneasy, confirm his opinion elsewhere.

Your uro may have said the tumors were common... but what he probably meant or should have meant is that they are the "most common form of bladder cancer." Timely treatment is still important so I would press him on the 12th as to why he wants to delay treatment or PET scan (unless it would further complicate your other health issues) so that you can understand his rationale.

I "hope" you feel better soon. Your quote is lovely... I like Emily Dickinson too!

Best wishes... Catherine

Since BCG is a live bacterium; if there is any underlying condition that might lead to the BCG causing systemic infection, they certainly would not administer it. I do not know what your other conditions are, so can't tell if this might be the reason. I would ask my urologist exactly what the delay is due to.

As you may have read on this site there is currently a shortage of BCG; however, this does not seem to be the cause of your delay.

You are fortunate that your tumors are low grade. Your urologist may be able to keep things under control for a while with frequent TURBs..

Well, I am new here..Female. Age 50.
Path report after first TURBT (1/31/2012) "Low grade Non- muscle invasive papillary carcinoma- 1 small tissue sample had high grade features".
My urologist explained this to be common and put off BCG treatments and recommended 12 wk follow up cystoscopy.
I saw a breast Dr in March, who recommended, and spoke to my uro about performing a PET scan due to many of my other issues (there are many). He saw no reason to do so, based on my bladder cancer diagnosis.
I returned for follow up cystoscopy in May, which revealed return of tumors. The second TURBT was performed on May 15. Pathology report same as the first. BCG treatments recommended. The after effects of surgery were much worse than with first TURBT. When I returned for 2 wk follow up visit, BCG treatments were again put off and my urologist left it to me to seek out other medical help with overlapping conditions, with a six wk follow up on July 12. I have done this, and things continue to be more complicated as I've completed more tests/procedures. There are more, yet to complete. Perhaps I will add more details when energy allows.."PET Scan" recommendation has come up with another specialist and I will know when I return to see urologist whether they spoke about it. Time reveals all.
For now, I am curious if others have had similar experiences before treatment protocol was actually implemented. And if any of you have other overlapping conditions which worsened after diagnosis/treatment? Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated..Blessings to all!

That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all...."
