In the movie, the HAL 9000 was built in Urbana, Il The U of I in Urbana is the home of the National Center for Supercomputing Research.
There are two companies called HAL. One is HAL Communications in Urbana and the is HAL Computing in CA.
I know there has been a burning desire out there for this information:P

H.A.L. the Computer
Maybe I can jog someones memory. But it was related to an Artificial Intellegence company sponsered or on the campus of the Univ of Illinois. I remember equipment they made with H.A.L. on it.

In a recent post, Pat mentioned H.A.L. the computer from
2001 a Space Odyssey
. Any ideas about the origin of the computer's name?
