This thread brings back memories of me staggering down a ward of ladies a lot older than myself, clinging to a zimmer frame with the 'collection' bags strapped to each leg slipping gently down! The cheering I got helped me to persevere!!
Good idea to keep active though but not too easy with a punctured lung!!

I suppose I should chime in. I got a standing ovation when I walked for the first time two days after my surgery.;) Took that long because I did not have a pain meds pump till then when they finally got me one it didn't work and it took four hours for them to figure that out. Luckily they did and boy was it great. Then I walked, walked, walked. It did take some figuring out because of all the tubes and stuff.

By the way....when I wound up hospitalized in mid-January for an intestinal blockage, I walked like crazy. I was up all hours of the day and night and walking all of the halls. I'd offer to be walking buddies with others who had surgery because I knew I didn't do it enough after my RC.

I'm convinced that if I had not walked so much, I would have needed surgery to clear the blockage.

Even though I walked all that much, I still couldn't convince them not to give me those anti-blood clot shots in the belly.

I even told them, "Hey, I walk more than the charge nurse! Give her the shot and leave me be." :)

Actually, the charge nurse in that hospital is supposed to stay in her spot at the nurses station so the nurses can find her so it was not intended as a slight to the charge nurse. Nurses are great!!! I married one. :) Well, she became one after we were married.

I do believe the nurses are the most critical part of the recovery though. (Except for walking!) :D

That's great Pat! I can just imagine it.

I used to sing that very loudly when my kids were little and wouldn't get out of bed! :D

I did learn how to turn off the darn alarm on the IV. I also did ask a couple of times what the point of the alarm was if it didn't bother anybody but me? Seems like the alarm needs to be sounding at the nurses station two times as loud as it does in the room! :)

Another trick I used is that I would hold the microphone from the nurses call unit right next to the IV alarm.

Oh...such memories. :silly:

Wow! Patricia I think singing the day after surgery is a much greater feat than walking. I'm proud of you.
