  • Mass in bladder during stent surgery

My husband (71, former smoker) had a stent placed yesterday for a kidney stone that’s blocking the ureter. Urologist said he found a 2 cm tumor, removed it and sent it to pathology, we’ll know in a few days. He said it looked “low grade” to him. Low grade as in, it is cancer but not aggressive? Or low grade as it could be benign? He seemed to think it was probably not benign since my husband is older and former smoker. My husband doesn’t have any symptoms other than has had intermittent microscopic blood in urine from the stone (2.5 cm!).
If no symptoms, does this mean it’s less serious?

    Hi, update and more questions.

So, path report came back today and it is:

High grade papillary urothelial carcinoma, invasive.

    Initial staging: T1

Exploratory surgery next month to determine if needs to be restaged.

    Tumor invades superficial lamina propria.

    2 cm

So, I guess not great but not terrible?

Sorry to hear about your husband’s issues. You will not even know if it is cancer until the pathology report comes
back. IF it is bladder cancer, low grade means that it is relatively slowly growing. If it has not spread the usual treatment for early low grade bladder cancer is a “watchful waiting” and your husband would have cystoscopy exams
every three months for a while. If it is high grade (rapidly dividing) additional treatment would be indicated. You need to wait until you have the pathology report before you know even if it IS cancer.

    Good luck!
