Thanks Mike and Pat

These days and nights have been full of anxiety awaiting results and what we've been told is so unexpected, we haven't even been able to react yet.

The biopsies for both the bladder and the prostate show the growths were not malignant: the bladder tissue is suggested to be hyperplasia and the prostate's a benign adenoma.

My father has also been 'manually inspected' to check on the prostate again. His uro says the surgeon must have noticed a stony prostate whilst on surgery but the fact is his prostate seems to be in good condition now.

Moreover, my father has been told not to come back for another cysto til December.

My brother and I are still insisting on a second opinion like you've suggested.

What do you think of all this?

My father is a male, 65, nonsmoker. Hematuria 01/08 TURB: T1 G3 widespread bladder+prostatic urethra; 3-month BCG.
Clean until 02/11: small TURB with no biopsy; 06/11 tumour detected TURB 08/11: awaiting biopsy, prostatic adenoma removed. Biopsies show both were benign. (...)

Oh yeah...forgot to mention....

They thought that the lumpy prostate may have been an indication of tuberculosis (especially since I had had BCG treatments) but it turned out not to be TB either.

In any case, I'd had problems with enlarged prostate and prostatitis for a while so when I had my cystectomy, I was actually pretty darn glad to be rid of the prostate. I figured it was only going to be a matter of time before I wound up with major problems and it was already causing me significant quality of life issues (having to pee about 10 times in the first 3 hours of being awake in the morning and then having to go about every hour to hour and half the rest of the day and through the night). Good riddance!

Gabriel,

When I had my first TURBT they noticed lumpiness with my prostate. Didn't say "stony" but they did say I needed it biopsied. My thought was "Why the hell didn't you just do that while I was under for the TURBT?". Anyway, they biopsied all over the place and it was fine for me. I'd had multiple occurrences of prostatitis and was biopsied again a couple year or so later and still no prostate cancer.

If your dad gets the cystectomy, the prostate comes out anyway so it kind of depends on how soon he can get that second opinion on the bladder.

If he's not getting a cystectomy in the very near future, then definitely the prostate needs prompt attention. If he is getting a cystectomy in the very near future, then they can dissect and study the prostate all they want since it won't be in his body anymore.

It could also be that the bladder cancer has spread to the prostate. That would actually likely be better than if it is a primary occurrence of prostate cancer.

He really needs to get on a plane and get to a top bladder cancer doctor right away. Both need to get figured out like right now!

I've heard of it Gabriel but i hate posting what might be bad news. Take a look at this paper and decide for yourself.

Thank you Mike. This is the push my parents need to realise a second opinion is crucial. I am aware we've been 'playing with fire' for three years and your arguments will help me finally persuade them to take a plane and get a second opinion somewhere.

By the way, have you ever heard of a "stony prostate lobe" and what that may be? The surgeon wants to do another surgery to get a biopsy of that.

Thanks again!
