Nancy,

You sound like you may want to cut the strength of your BCG to 1/3 or maybe 1/10 as your side effects are increasing. Those numbers seem to bear out as still being effective. As I have reminded myself many times this is still better than chemo!

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

Not sure where you are on this "journey," but I've just completed #5. I also have Fibromyalgia, Psoriatic Arthritis, Severe Small-Fiber Neuropathy and Chronic Migraine. For the first 4 treatments, all I had was some burning, and some increase in the chronic fatigue. Yesterday's treatment is hitting harder, with nausea, mild low-grade fever, chills and hot flushes.
It's doable. I've re-adjusted my work schedule so that I'm working 3 long days, Mon-Wed, then treatments on Thursday. This has worked out well and I haven't missed work. Yes, today is not a great day, but I'm playing the long game here and my goal is bladder conservation. I will complete my 6th treatment in a week, then the follow up cystoscopy on Sept. 6th. After that, I have made it clear that I want to continue with maintenance for 3 years, and my doc agrees.
Every journey is different. I am an aggressive, pushy broad whose first response to the diagnosis was severe annoyance. I went from my first symptom to surgery in 9 days. That's how I roll.
The numbers are in your favor; do the reading and see that the goal here is to keep ahead of it, and that is doable. By putting up with the BCG (again, not fun but pretty easily endured) you improve your odds of reducing the likelihood of recurrence, and if the cancer does recur, reducing the advancement of Stage. Basically, do the BCG, significantly increase the likelihood that you will keep your bladder.

I had my first BCG treatment on Wednesday and have had no symptoms at all.... yet. I think I read somewhere (probably here) that typically they begin to appear around the 3rd treatment. However, I figured that I would feel SOMETHING?? I noticed on my "patient portal" report that the drug used was "TICE" (instead of TheraCys). I wonder if that is significant? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE....work!

Peace and Love - Dave

Apparently everyone is different with BCG. I just had my fifth of six treatments today and, again, no side effects at all - no aches, pains, fever, etc. Now I hope it actually works. I didn't know the 75% success rate. That gives me hope. I knew BCG helped but I didn't know that good.

08/16/16 - TURBT - 1 tumor, T1HG, 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.8 cm, non-invasive papillary.
BCG treatments (15 doses total - last March, 2018). As of latest cysto, As of May 4, 2023 - cancer free!

Trapperray,

Welcome but, we all say sorry for the reason to be here. BCG is doable and about a 75% cure rate is correct! You do have a concerning side issue with the arthritis and fybromyalgia. There have been some that find their arthritis worse from the BCG. On the fybromyalgia I don't remember others posting about that issue. Perhaps another specialist with your URO can consult on your specific case as everyone is different. With the re-occurences BCG is certainly advised to beat back this disease. Maybe even trying one treatment at a time? 46 is too young to give up on this.

Keep us posted as all of us learn from everyone.

Hello all, I just joined and searching for info on side effects of BCG and found this site.I was diagnosed in Feb. 2012 and the finding was my whole bladder was consumed by a tumer/s and it was removed, it has returned four times sinse.I start bcg on 1/31/17.As of late I have never experienced a cath. all my cysto's have been under anastethsia.I fear the aches and pains that I hear some have as a side effect for I have fybromyalgia, UC, and wide spread arthritis. The more I research BCG the more I am not wanting it.My urologist claims a 75% success rate? My wife and kids keep pushing me to have these treatments and the more they push the more I want to let nature take it's course and let be.Thus far my cancer is low grade non invasive. Age 46 male.
