I had several bladder infections during my BCG treatments.
Following my 30th and final treatment I had a major one, which I believe was actually caused on my 29th treatment. Cipro did not work this time as it had in the past. My Uro sent me to an infection specialist. My left eye was nearly closed, my gums heard, and joints were extremely sore. I can not remember the antibiotic I was given by the infection specialist. In about 4 weeks I was back to normal. During this time I saw the specialist twice a week. He was not sure what had caused the problem. He said I was fortunate that my Uro acted so quickly in getting me to the specialist.
After getting a report from the specialist, I contacted my Uro, my 2nd opinion Uro, and Dr. Lamm. All three agreed that I was not to have any further BCG treatments.
I continued to have a few infections during the following 9 months and continued to see the infection specialist. He found I was not fully emptying my bladder, which he thought maybe was caused by so many BCG treatments. He started me on cranberry supplements, 500 mg and also drinking 1/2 glass of 100% cranberry juice 2 times per day. I have not had a bladder infection since, and my latest pressure test done by the infection specialist indicated that I am now emptying my bladder, which he believes is because of no further BCG treatments.
