I got my UMMA test results back today. They were normal. Normal range was listed as less that 3.8, mine was 1.1 Im going to have this test done by my GP next time I have a physical and yearly after that just to be safe. I think its pretty important for all RC people to have this test done once a year.

I got this off the Mayo site:

A normal serum concentration of vitamin B(12) does not rule out tissue deficiency of vitamin B(12). The most sensitive test for vitamin B(12) deficiency at the cellular level is the assay for MMA. If clinical symptoms suggest deficiency, measurement of MMA and homocysteine should be considered, even if serum vitamin B(12)concentrations are normal.

KC,

I don't know which test he uses as I haven't hit my one year mark yet. Coming up next month though.

Diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency is typically based on measurement of serum vitamin B12 levels; however, about 50 percent of patients with subclinical disease have normal B12 levels. A more sensitive method of screening for vitamin B12 deficiency is measurement of serum methylmalonic acid and homocysteine levels, which are increased early in vitamin B12 deficiency.
OK thats an eye opener right?
Here's the Mayo site........they state MMA..which is the urine MMA

Interesting to note that that little purple pill Nexium they gave me to take for 6 weeks after my cystectomy may have contributed to my quick decline in B12...?? ya think?
So also have your folic acid checked at the same time..that was something i did not know nor did my doctor..Now i know.

Webs,

Do you know which test they gave you? My results from the serum b12 test were at 364, which also falls into the normal range. If you are in the normal range and they still tell you you need shots it again makes me wonder what good the serum B12 test is. (if thats the test they gave you)
