Maria...finally..i'm so glad this was a good experience and that Dr. Algood listened and made you feel confident in his abilities. He seems to have a very good medical background. Sorry to hear about the nephrostomy tube....i'm actually being tested for that myself next week as i've been having flank pain and they want to make sure its not my kidney.
I'm wishing you the best and you know we'll be here to support you in every way.
I think the Moffitt Center should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves or anyone else thats part of the NCCN or NCI that does not act honorably when someone needs their help......they certainly spend enough money advertising how great they are..and the middle class falls into the cracks once again should be their motto.
Wish i could have been more help.........Pat
Today I have been to the University of Florida Shands Center, Gainesville and met with Dr Algood for my second opinion consultation. I was extremely hesitant and anxious given the awful experience I had at the Lee Moffit Cancer Center in December.
Finally I have a treatment plan; Dr Algood recommended I start treatment immediately. Due to the delays and time wasting caused by the Lee Moffit Cancer Center I had pre chemo tests organized by my oncologist during the past 3 weeks. Test results showed a high grade hydronephrosis (blocked kidney) confirmed by IVP test.
Dr Algood spent a significant amount of time reading all of my previous CT scans, bone scans and path reports, he was very thorough he also did a cysto. He was determined that I would leave with a treatment plan. He was extremely professional and has a great sense of humor!
His opinion is that I have a high grade T3 tumor which is flat and has invaded at least half of my bladder and this is causing my kidney obstruction.
Monday I am returning to Shands for a procedure at Internal Radiology to deal with the blocked kidney (they will put tubes in my back, with a bag to collect urine) I will start chemo MVAC mid week at my local hospital. RC planned end April.
Just to conclude, Dr Algood and his team were extremely professional and the care provided today was a standard of excellence, I would recommend anyone who is looking for a resource in Florida to contact this major cancer center.
The Shands was the only hospital in Florida who did not question my insurance unlike every other major cancer centers we have attempted to make appointments with! My Oncologist recommended I contact the Shands based on his good experiences and outcomes he has had with his patients with various cancer dx’s.
Prior to the appointment communication was excellent, I only waited a short time for an urgent appointment in comparison to other major cancer centers who could not offer even urgent appointments for 6-10 weeks, only on the condition of a $$$$ retainer!!!
I have received great support and help from Patricia with my efforts to find a surgeon to assist me and despite all the resources I have tried my endurance with this challenge finally achieved the positive outcome I wanted.
I would definitely advise anyone who lacks confidence in their uro to seek out a second opinion, it was the best thing I did for me and my chances to beat this cancer.
So now I enter another phase of my cancer journey, although I am positive I am scared of what lies ahead, fear of the unknown in relation to chemo and surgery, but I am determined to get though this and I will!
