When it comes to end-of-life issues such as Hospice Care and nursing homes, we need to ask ourselves ethical questions such as: What type of society do we want? What sort of social structures should supersede profit?
With laissez-faire capitalism (or Free Market, if you prefer) there is nothing sacred, there are no boundaries of transgression. The market treats the individual as a commodity. The ideology of the market knows no values except efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
Hospice Care ( a relatively new business) like many other healthcare issues are not immune to lack of oversight and regulation that are so important to ensure that people are treated with dignity regardless of profit. It is just a question of our societies priorities. In my opinion Senior issues are mostly a pay-for-play situation these days.
