Coming up on one year and I think I finally have this thing figured out....... Changing the bag. I get out my supplies, bag, attachment patch, bag to hold old appliance for throw away, two face towels and hair dryer. I remove bag from and then the attachment patch. Meanwhile I lean up against the bathroom sink counter with a face towel between me and the counter. This will catch any urine that comes out while having no appliance attached. I then wash the stoma with the second face towel with good hot water. I then use my hair dryer to dry the stoma area using the first face cloth to dab the area to make sure I keep the area dry. I find that the hair dryer warms the skin which allows the attachment patch to adhere a lot better than trying to use your fingers to warm up the adhesive. I quickly remove the first face cloth from the stoma and apply the attachment patch. At this point if any urine leaks out the patch is already sealed. I then pull the remaining paper covering the patch adhesive on both sides and press it down. I then use the hair dryer one more time to warm the appliance up and press down all around to make sure everything is down and sealed. ..... Usually I go three days between changing bags. I do notice that if I start to smell an unpleasant smell it's because the bag has started to leak around the attachment patch. Sometimes you can't see that it's leaking while other times you can start to see the dark coloration somewhere around the ring. The smell is a dead giveaway there's a leak started. For me what starts the leakage most often is the constant bending over. My belt or waistband of my pants push up against the appliance patch. At first I used to hike my pants up to my waist which is right up against the bottom of the appliance. Now I keep them down a couple inches below the appliance. Since I ware long tailed shirts this helps cover the appliance. I also put a black appliance bag over the appliance bag. (I purchased on line). This helps keep the urine bag from showing. (no one wants to look at someone's urine). ...... Showering. I found I could shower without covering my bag. I just dry off the around the attachment patch with a hair dryer and it seems to continue to hold.........Night time. At night I hook up to my collection bag. I extended the clear tube so that's it's about five feet long. I have an "L" shape wood bracket with a knob at the top that I just hook the plastic bag handle on and the whole thing sits in a plastic tub up against the side of my bed. The bag hangs straight down and there is no danger of the bag leaking, but if it did the plastic tub will catch anything. I then attach the clear tubing against my leg just below my knee with a velcro strap. This keeps the bag from being pulled on by the tube while you sleep. I ended up hot gluing the soft tube to the small attachment clamp that attaches the tube to the bottom of the bag. I found that it was easy to pull the tube off during the night. Every morning after emptying my bag I fill the bag with hot water. I just hold the green empting clamp up against the faucet. I then hold it up and allow the hot water to exit the long tube which keeps it clean.
