iXanadu,

In my initial discussions (before my 2 TURBTs) with my Dr., he told me that very often after the 2nd TURBT
BCG is administered for the 6 weeks, and sometimes as maintenance thereafter. However following my 2nd TURBT and clean pathology report, he explained that he wanted me to start with MMC since I had a very small and shallow tumor that was Stage 0a. He thought it best to start with MMC because of the minimal side effects and said he would prefer that we keep BCG for down the road should I need it. (hopefully not!). He did mention that there was a shortage of BCG, but

that was NOT the reason he suggested this route. He is a top Urologic Oncologist at a top cancer hospital that only handles Bladder Cancer, so I am very comfortable with his recommendation.

This is totally new ( and scary ) ground for me too . I will post comments as I go through MMC treatments. I hope this has helped some.

All the best

JDRVNJ,

If you learn more about the “why” and the results of the MMC please share. I get my second TURBT to confirm the stage in four weeks, and if remains stage 1 will begin BCG. I have some apprehension on two counts, the availability and side effects. I’m in my early stage of research, but it sounds like six weeks of flu symptoms, and the need for a separate toilet for 2 days after treatment. This translates to working from home 3 days a week which I can do, but prefer not to be away from my team that often. “If” MMC is as effective maybe I should research that as well.

Results vary, but most reports I have seen here match my response to MMC.

I sensitized to BCG and have a horrid couple of days after BCG.

Mitomycin (MMC) had virtually no side effects for me. A few hours of urgency and I was back to normal.

I hope you have similar results.

Best

Sara Anne,

My Dr. said that he would prefer to go with MMC initially and keep BCG for down the road if the need arises.

Is your doctor using Mitomycin because of the BCG shortage or does he have another reason?

Hello friends,

Had second TURBT last week, and biopsy came back all clear, thank goodness. My Dr. has now advised that I undergo Mitomycin C vs. BCG. Schedule seems to be the same, 6 treatments 1x per week. Was told the side effects tend to be mild. I work in an office and sit behind a desk for 9 hours a day. I scheduled the treatments for Fridays so I can have the weekend to recover if need be.

Does anyone have advice/experience they can share? I am healthy 54 yo man.
