About a week ago I noticed tiny blood clots in my urine. I dont have any other symptoms. I gave a urine sample, which at first glance didnt show an infection. She sent it away for a culture and cytology, which hasnt come back yet.
I had a CT w/wo contrast, which didn't show any abnormalities and next I'm scheduled for a cystoscopy.
My Dr told me to stay positive and that i dont have any risk factors for cancer, but what else could it be?
(I'm a white, 48 year old female who never smoked or hasn't been exposed to any chemicals, and doesn't have any family history).
I'm assuming it's cancer because like I said, I don't have pain or other symptoms. I had my yearly routine urinalysis from last month came back with no abnormalities except a trace amount of blood.
Please offer any other suggestions as to why I could have blood in my urine. (Also, it's not a female issue)
I can understand your worry. But having said that there are about 1000 things that can cause blood in the urine meaning 999 are not bladder cancer. There are times that after extensive testing no reason is ever found and the person goes on symptom free. The odds are in favor of it not being Bladder cancer but even if it was remember the vast majority (75%) are noninvasive and most of those are low grade with excellent treatment out comes. Hold comfort that the odds are with you and that you are going to get answers in due time. Stress is bad for anyone try to stay positive as you wait for answers.

What a kind woman you are Cynthia.
Thank you for your encouraging words. I have had a major health issue in my early 20s
- acetaminophen toxicity which lead to acute liver failure and was not expected to live - ever since then, I am on high alert at all times with regards to health issues.
"Waiting for the other shoe to drop" is an awful, and exhausting way to live and I wish I could shut my brain off. We are having an terrible snowstorm here so there is no one in the office to give me any other results ... so I have no other choice but to wait it out.
Thank you again Cynthia. I truly wish you the best!
The best advice I ever got was "one day at a time"! As far as your hematuria, as Cynthia said it could be many things. I offer from my wife which had unexplained bleeding some 25 years ago and they did a retro grade pylogram that reads from the bladder into the kidneys. They never did find a reason. Another friends wife has had off and on hematuria over the years with no known reason. Heck it could be as simple as a kidney stone has nicked your system. The good news is your CT scan showed nothing. The other 2 tests which are a cytology and cystoscopy are the gold standards with CT scan so lets just hope it is nothing! One day at a time.

Thank you Alan for your kind and informative words. My primary care Dr sent out my urine sample and it came back 100% normal. The cytology was normal and did not show any malignant cells. My urologist also sent out my urine (she prefers her lab). I should get that back tomorrow. I guess I should still go for the cystoscopy in the next week to rule everything out completely.
I've aged 10 years this past week! I've got enough, serious, chronic health issues going on, I really didn't need another.
