Blood in urine, former smoker

Tuesday evening I saw blood in my urine. For the evening - like 4 times that night and twice the next morning. I have no symptoms of uti so immediately went to the dr. She wrote me a rx for uti and also gave me a name of a urologist. She sent the culture out and I’ve heard nothing. I think because there is no infection with the holiday upon us I won’t be able to call again until Tuesday. Obviously there are not a lot of reasons behind blood in the urine. Bladder cancer is all over Google... and I used to smoke for like 15-20 years. I'm 46 years old. I’ve had a lot health worries over the years but nothing like this. I’m scared to death. I can’t even function because I’m just so shocked. And I don’t even know what to do next...literally I don't even know what to do. Do i call the doctor tomorrow and book a follow up or just call a urologist?? And I have my 10 year old daughter with me so i can't have her seeing my emotion...

They took a sample and she said there was blood and *some* bacteria in it- when she said some she said it in a way that seemed there was not much bacteria....she said she was going to send it out for culture and see if anything grows. Then said she was also giving me the name of a urologist....so she's treating for uti because it's the simplest cause. I do not have a uti though. I am positive because this is not the way they present with me. With me it's the burning. I have ALWAYS had the burning and I have NEVER had blood.

If it was only a little bacteria in it that could be from how I collected it maybe i accidentally touched the lid or something. And I have never had a doctor send out a sample for culture because they always could tell for sure in the office.
I am afraid.

I know it is difficult, but please try to calm down a bit. There are many, many reasons for blood in the urine that are NOT bladder cancer. Even if you know how a UTI feels, it could be a different bug. Your doc did right by sending you to a urologist and culturing the bug. Even if it IS bladder cancer (and remember that the odds are against it). If found early it is very treatable.

Please let us know the results of your meeting with the urologist.

Donna Sue,

In the same situation - blood in urine, and told to "wait for results" I went to the net and panicked, until I found this site, with people who have actually been there.

Calm down. enjoy the holidays. Nothing is going to happen fast, no matter how much we want instant results and answers. The medical system just does not work that way. And it apparently does not need to. A few days her, a couple of weeks there does not matter in the grand scheme of things.

You are on the right track - If urology finds anything suspicious, you will wait weeks for a biopsy, then 2 more weeks for a biopsy report - all happening in system time.

Blood in the urine indicating cancer is far less than a 1/2 of 1% chance, even in high risk populations. BUT, since cancer is a possible diagnosis, it must be ruled-out.

Believe me, it is OK to relax and enjoy. Just be sure to keep the follow up appointments. I learned that on this site a couple of years ago, and it is true.

Best
Jack

Thank you both. That's exactly what the doctor said that the chances of this being cancer are low. And yet here we are so ma y people it has happened to.
So to do the biopsy I have to go to the hospital right? And is there an incision made? And it takes weeks to learn the results?
Even if bladder cancer is treatable, it always comes back worse right?

The biopsy (technical term “TURB or transurethral resection of the bladder”) is usually done as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Most patients go home the same day. No incision...the doc goes in through the urethra with a small camera....just as when he does a cystoscopy exam. The tissue removed is sent to the pathology lab for analysis and it usually takes about a week for the results to come back.

Bladder cancer does often return. But not always. I was diagnosed almost 9 years ago and so far have not had a recurrence. And also please remember that people who have problems tend to post and the many who do not have issues disappear.

It is shocking to me the amount of people I am reading that were diagnosed after a bout of blood in the urine just like me. Like there are not any stories of it turning out to be something else. This is exactly why I'm scared.
I don't k ow what to prepare for....time missed from work? We can't really afford for me to not work. And I'm not quite full time.e anyway I'm only 33 hours a week. And my daughter has always had a fear of losing me because I lost my mom to colon cancer when i was 28. What do i say?
