24 and scared

The most important advice we can give you is ....take a deep breath! It is very likely that this might be an infection or something similar. There are many reasons for blood in the urine and many of them are never found. You are fortunate that your doctors are taking it seriously and have referred you to a urologist....With young females doctors often just ignore this.

While you cannot help worrying, your doctors are correct in that it is unlikely that you have bladder cancer. While it very rarely shows up in people your age, it can happen. But it is more likely to show up in older, smoking males (of course I am a never-smoking female, but I was in my late 60's.) The urologist will have a lot more experience in diagnosing your problem.

Please let us know what he/she says since others similar to you may be looking for answers.

Wishing you all the best

Hey everyone,

I’ve been reading the posts on here for about a week now, and just want to say how awesome everyone is. Strong and courageous might be better words though.

I’m 24, and have been having issues with my bladder for a little over a month now. It started with what I thought was a UTI (funny smelling urine, pressure, and an urge to urinate but not a lot of urine), so my obgyn put me on bactrim. I ended up going to the ER for an unrelated issue, and they tested my urine and said there was blood in it. They changed my antibiotic to cifdinir, gave me an abdominal/pelvic ct scan with dye and contrast, and told me I was fine. I was taking the cifdinir and my symptoms seemed to have subsided at this point, but while on vacation with my family I started to have pain after I would urinate. I actually drove 4 hours home to see my obgyn, and he told me there was still blood in my urine, but to finish the antibiotic. So I did. 4 days later and I was still having occasional burning after I would urinate. I went back to my obgyn and he did a urine cath, which turned out to be completely normal. He put me on another antibiotic, and sent me home. A few days ago, I noticed blood on the toilet paper after I urinated, so I flew to the ER. They took more urine, and said there was in fact blood in it. The same day I had an ultrasound of my bladder, kidneys, and ovaries done. All they found was an ovarian cyst. I have an appointment with a urologist in the middle of September, but I am FREAKING OUT. My doctors have told me because of my age and non risk factors they think anything serious is unlikely, but I can’t help but think otherwise. At this point I’m concerned there could be something on the lining of my bladder.

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you so much
