  • weeping stitches?

My husband is now five weeks post-surgery, and still has his supra-pubic drainage tube. He is cathing OK from his Indiana pouch, but is having some “weeping” from two places on his surgical wound. The stitches have been out for three weeks, (I think that long), but those two spots continue to ooze.

Any ideas? Is this a problem? He goes back to the surgeon next Tuesday, but is a little nervous. I think he’s worried that the whole incision will pop open. It’s not a lot,,,,just enough to stain a his shorts overnight. At first, he thought his stoma was leaking, but we covered both areas, and now we can see what the problem is.

He, and I, would appreciate knowing if this is normal.

    Thanks!

hmmmm.bulging area where stiches are…sounds like some lymphatic fluid build-up searching to escape. At any rate the saline and gauze a good idea until you can talk to the doctor and no jumping out of airplanes or heavy lifting………Pat

You should of called his Dr right away about the oozing and if you are nearby where he had the surgery done his Dr would of sent him to the ER just to have a look and be on the safe side. When it is ozzing even though things are fine that is when you run the chance of infection and with any post op you don’t want that. But Tuesday you say he’s going back to the surgeon so he will check it out then. Take Care, Joe ;)

No temp, no blood, no smell, no pus. All good things, right?

It’s just an almost clear serum from a couple of small bulging places along the incision itself, not the staple holes. It’s not coming through a hole, just oozing from the skin itself. I think he’s worried he’s going to split open, but it’s not a lot, and there’s no indication of infection.

Stephany what is it oozing?…blood or clear liquid? Is it through the staple holes or is there an open wound? Any temperature? Pat

Thank you…that was exactly what I needed to know, so I can tell him. We’ll start “packing” today.

Stephany, my husband has the ileal conduit, but when they took his staples out on 8-17-07 (his surgery was 8-6-07) he had one short section of wound that was oozing. The doctor told him to clean it with sterile saline and “pack” it with 2″x2″ gauze pads 2-3 times a day to allow it to heal from the inside. It it not quite healed, but is doing well.
