  • Waiting for full results but wont let it beat me

Posted by manxman on April 5, 2012 at 10:22 am

I have been following your forums for a few days now and have been getting a lot of inner strengeth from your comments to each other.

I am a 47 year old man with a wonderful supportive wife and two great teenage kids.We live on a small island in the Irish sea which is very beautiful. So I feel very lucky.

8 weeks ago I went to the Drs with complaints of increased urgency when I pass urine, he told me to cut down on my cafine . 2 weeks later noticed my urine was slightly discoloured and as I am a community nurse I checked it with my testing kit. It showed I had blood in it ,so of to the Drs I went again. This time he sent me for a cystoscopy. Like the rest of you I was shocked to get the results, as soon as I seen the screen as procedure was being carried out I new I had a tumor.

Last week I had TURBT and had some chemo. The hospital staff where excellent and I have a wonderful Urology nurse specialist who will be following me up. Still in shock but did not let this take over my life. It could not have occured a more stressful time as I was completing my Non Medical Prescribing paper as the final part of my degree. Had 3 weeks to complete the work. Rather than let this cancer take me over I contacted my university teacher . She told me I could put the course off for 6 months, but this was not what I wanted , I needed to focus on something other than the cancer diagnosis. There has been tearful times over the last few weeks , but they dont last long . It has been good for me having something else to focus on. Family and friends have been so supportive.

Last Thursday I came out of hospital after the opperation and treatment, 4 days later I was in the university doing my final paper . As I went into the class all my colleagues cheared and applauded me as know one expected me to turn up for the finals. It was hard work but I feel really good not letting the cancer rule my life. I got my provisional results of the exams today, I scored 96% in the exam and 100% on the practical. It blew me away.

Now I am just waiting for the results of my pathology to see if there is any signs of the cells in the muscle wall, they should arrive in a few weeks. Plan to start back to work next week and get on with things as normal. Yes I will have to go for regular check ups and may need further treatment, but life is for living. Will keep in touch with this forum as looking for tips on keeping healthy .

:) Manxman I too am delighted for you that your results came back low grade. The strain you must have gone through waiting for those results must have put you and yours through a lot of stress..Bless.

You can now have an extra portion of ‘Manx Kippers’ for your breakfast. Tradition over there..

As a child, (many many moons ago :( )I spent many nice holidays on the Isle of Man. Beautiful part of the world..

Wonderful news! As another person who had a low grade diagnosis, I know you still have to be cautious and have your checkups, but as my urologist says at this grade and stage he considers it just a “nuisance cancer.” Hope you have a wonderful spring and summer with this good news in mind.

 Good morning every one from the sunny Isle of Man
After a few phone calls to the hospital I finally got a call from my urologist to say that the the pathology results showed my cancer to be a low grade non-invasive type, which should have been cured by the treatment I recieved.
Now I begin my regular 3 month check ups
This does not bother me as the important thing is to remain strong , happy and healthy so I can spend these valuable years with my kids as they grow up.
Celebrated this morning by going out 6 km run before work :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

The Isle of Man may be a small island but we try to cram as much into it as possible. Defenitely a mecca for motor heads with the TT, Manx Grand prix and then there is the four wheel racing, rally cross, off road 4×4 and vintage rallys.
But if your not into motor sport we have great fishing , cycling and some of the best hiking around.
TT is a crazy time on the island with 10s of thousands coming from all over the world to watch some of the greatest ever motor cyclists race on our mountain road circuit.

Manxman, That is one beautiful town you have there!

Someday I am going to travel over there. My brother has been to all those places, and keeps asking if I want to come along. I’m going to have to say yes one of these times.

George & Warren, If you ever come this way again, let me know so we can have coffee together. Your right the winters can be hard, but not this year. The summers are really humid and yes our state bird is the mosquito.

You can’t see Russia from my house, but you are dang near in Canada!

George, as I remember it…Yoopers to the north, and Trolls to the south!!!:) Any how you can’t beat getting some drive through pasties in Escanaba. But the best pasties come from the iron range!

Mark, I grew up in the Twin Cities, use to listen to the Cannon Mess on CCO…sometimes I still try to tune in 830!! I use to love going up to Duluth, go to the zoo, play on the Viking ship, see the ore ships, all that good stuff!! Great place, I miss the winters….but you can keep the summer muggies and the mosquitoes!!!!

I never looked at your profile page (Man, that was dumb) but I had a hankerin you were from the Up in Mich. When I lived in Michigan the Yoopers always referred to anything north of Flint as “Up North”
Been to Deluth a few times on my way to the Quedico in Canada to fish. I Love the road sign on the road that says: Atikoken— 175km
    End of Earth– 130km

    Just seems funny to me.

You live in a Great Place. But the winters must be Brutal and nary a ski area in sight.

The isle of Man is kind of a Mecca for Motorcyclists. The TT must be a wild time for your hometown. I was a great fan of “Mike the Bike” back in the day. He was one of a few that made the transition to 4 wheels and Formula 1. Each year I watch the TT on The SPEED channel and it still amazes me that this can go on. I am sure the lawyers would have a field day of this was in the States.
Glad to have you here Manxman. You are in with a great group of Survivors who won’t let cancer get them down.

What a great attitude you have! I love your observation that life is for the living… I need to remind myself of that more often when I get caught up in my web of worries on occasion.

Mark… I’m not sure why photos won’t upload now since the new site turnover, but you might explain how to find your boat in your profile gallery. She is a beauty!!!

    Best wishes… Catherine
