My husband has been admitted 4x to hospital, intervals of approx. 3 to 4 months for fever, chills and UTI. He had a RC in March 2008,t2b2,no node or margin involvement. Each time culture sensitized and treated with antibiotics. This admission same symptoms, but no out growths of cultures.Has been on a prophylatic microbid antibiotic since last admission. Docs are suspecting possibly hidden colonization of bacteria in crevices of conduit or pocket somewhere? Last CT scan, in 9/09 showed nothing of the sort. Anyone experience similar occurrances? Help.

well in some cases its a real problem with repeated infections with the ileal conduit as there is nothing to keep the urine from backing up into the kidneys. I’m sure they’ve ruled out any kind of stricture right? Here’s a good article to read

Fill him up with cranberry juice or at least the pills…
I’m sure you’re taking all the precautions with changing the bag at frequent intervals and caring for the skin…….

Pat, my husband had procedure (RC) with resultant urostomy bag.Surgery done at Sloan, by Dr. Bochner(love, love him). The MD’s where I work said today ,it is the same organism (in the urine) as last 2 admits. They have no suggestions or solutions. They ruled out abcess and colon issues. We are lost. Infectious disease merely states that my husband should take same antibiotic, whenever this reoccurs. Could these infections be the result of the conduit surgery, perhaps urine backing up? Ever hear of something like that?

sydelle….exactly what type of diversion does your husband have? That will help narrow it down.
