    Steelerfan,

    All of us had to come to grips with it. The hardest part was the beginning when words were thrown at us and we were clueless. The doc said, “Cancer”, and our minds went blank.

    There is much helpful, patient provided, info in this site. No scare or sales stories, but comments and experiences helpful to others. The SEARCH option will help you find discussion on terms such as FISH and CIS, etc. You are welcome to post you qhoughts or questions.

    The FISH test is best described as a “screening tool” to be used as part of the early investigation into the possibility of urinary system cancer. By itself FISH is ONLY one indicator test for the possibility of cancer. FISH is not accurate enough to make a diagnosis.

    If FISH and other screening tests (including the history physical exam) are positive, additional testing is indicated.

    At the early stage of diagnosis, do remember that Urothelial Cancer, when caught early, is highly treatable. This is good news that should be given to every person at his/her first medical encounter for possible Urothelial Cancer.

    Simply put, carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the bladder is a form of cancer that appears as a rash on the surface of the bladder rather than as a solid discrete tumor,. It is always high grade, which means that it is fast-growing and can spread rapidly, but if found early is often well treated by a form of immunotherapy, BCG.

    Have you had a TURB (biopsy) of the bladder? While the FISH test is very sensitive, sometimes it is too much so and can show false positive results. It is only when the diagnosis is confirmed by a biopsy and pathology examination that you can be sure of the diagnosis.

    I am a good example of a patient with CIS. Was diagnosed in 2008 and had BCG treatments and maintenance. I have been cancer=free ever since!!!
