Urothelial cancer in the left kidney
Posted by DougG on November 5, 2015 at 12:32 amThat is what Doug has. It is the same cancer that was in the bladder, still in the urinary tract — only in 2 – 4% of bladder cancer patients does the cancer move to the kidney. The plan is for Doug to have Gemzar installed in his bladder 6 Fridays in a row (skipping Thanksgiving week), then wait 4 weeks and repeat the exploratory surgery and see if it is working in the kidney. Doug wanted a chance to try to save the kidney. I am also trying to get him scheduled for an appointment at Vanderbilt, just to confirm he is headed in a good direction. Glad we have a plan.

Hi Anita… I hope Doug’s appointment went well. Is there any follow up treatment as a result of the path report?
Best wishes… CatherineTURBT 1/21/10 at age 55

Nashville, TNWe got the pathology report last Monday — aggressive, T3. Tuesday, we go back to Nashville; they will make sure the bladder is sealed (where they had to cut the cusp) and if it is the catheter will come out!!!

Forum ModeratorHi Anita… Like Cynthia, I have thought of you two many times today. That is great news that it appears to be confined to the kidney. Let Doug know the forum team is cheering him on! I know it has been a long day for you as well. Hope you can rest a little bit tonight. I remember they came around about 10:30 that first night to get me up to walk and I was glad to have a good friend staying in the room with me. Take care of you, too!
Here’s to cancer-free days ahead!
Best wishes… CatherineTURBT 1/21/10 at age 55

CaregiverJoe,
Thanks so much. That is encouraging. Doug’s surgery was 1:35 till 6:35. He is in recovery. We will get to see him in about an hour (9:30). The really GOOD news on Doug is that the cancer is not outside the kidney.

Forum ModeratorAnita, first words of encouragement. Having my kidney removed was not that bad of a surgery pain was not bad and was up and going pretty well in a few weeks. Tell Doug to take it easy and make you wait on him hand and foot…not lol make him get up and and walking as soon as they give you the red light. I think I was in three or four days and not on a lot of pain meds when I got out.
I hear what you say you feel like you are being unfaithful going out with a new Surgeon but send you old one flowers or candy and all will be forgiven. You are right to go with experience so don’t feel guilty for doing the right thing.
Both of you take it easy. We will be here and you will be in my heart and mind. Let us know how wonderfully he does as soon as you can.

President American Bladder Cancer SocietyDoug’s surgery will be Monday at Vanderbilt. His local doctor only does one or two nephroureterectomy surgeries per year, so I really pushed him to go to someone who does more. Doug has been with his urologist for 15 years, so we felt almost like two timers going elsewhere. I think we made the right decision. Doug will be in the hospital 3 -5 days. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

CaregiverSorry to hear this, Anita.
But I know several that live with one kidney, including my own father. He had it removed some 13 years ago and is still living normal. He turn 86 later this year.
I hope that it is only scars in the bladder so it can be kept. Should it be otherwise you can also live a good life. Just look at all us bladderless at this forum.
Doug is lucky that have you as a support and caregiver, and you are a good team together.
I cross my fingers for you.
Sincerely,
Knut
