My husband went in for a HoLEP procedure to reduce the size of his prostate and the procedure had to be stopped because they found bladder cancer. He has low grade “watch and see” prostate cancer. They did two TURBTs. They determined it hadn’t penetrated the muscular wall and started BCG treatment. After the first treatment the first two days went great but then he got chills, shaking, a fever and total inability to urinate. We went to the ER to have his bladder emptied and insertion of a Foley catheter. They want to stop the treatment amd get him back in for a HoLEP to reduce the prostate size but that surgeon is booked weeks out because of the saline shortage. We are currently in a hold position not knowing what the plan will be. He may just have to continue BCG with a Foley catheter in for the entire treatment. Any advice or experience?

Some patients just cannot tolerate BCG for various side effects and need to stop BCG treatment. Gemcitabine/Docetaxel is intravesical chemotherapy treatment, which is often used for those patients who could not tolerate BCG, BCG is known to cause prostatitis for some patients, and prostatitis can enlarge prostate. Switching to Gemcitabine/Docetaxel is something you want to discuss with your urologist.
