:S Just a quick update on my sister. She still has ZERO control. She wears a diaper and two pads that she has to change every hour. She is so discouraged and doesn’t even want to get up off the couch. Patricia, I am in the process of trying to get hold of Eila Skinner to make an appointment to see if anything can be done for her. Thanks for sending me her name. I am keeping real careful notes on all these problems this doctor has caused her. I still can’t believe that he cut back her urethra 3 times!!! Of course she has no control!!!! And then to find that she still has cancer in the urethra and the ureter to one kidney!!!!!! That doctor needs to retire. I wish all of you wonderful people out there, lending your support when you are going through so much yourselves, a happy new year with nothing but good news for 2009. Love, Barbara

    Hi Barbara,
I am so sad to hear about your sister. She must be extremely depressed. She may need to deal with that before she can deal with what she needs to do about her current situation. I can only imagine how difficult this is for you. She is very lucky to have you as her cancer warrior. Hang in there and take care of yourself.

hmmm. a large box of Depends goes for $89.00 with 80 diapers…..if changed every hour…in 4 days or so she’s gone through the box…….so in 30 days thats 7 boxes of 80 which comes to $632.00….and that doesn’t count in the extra pads she’s using…….so i think the $700 is a bargain for a consult.
    Just a thought………..Pat

    Hello Barb,

I am very sorry to hear of the challenges that your sister is facing.

I have always put my medical care as the top priority. I believe one gets what one pays for. And the $700 would be worth every cent if this Doctor can fix whats happened and give your sister her life back.

This is truly a unique surgery and one that not that many doctors are skilled in. I am amazed how many doctors/nurses don’t even know what is available to people with bladder cancer.

I will continue to wish your sister the very best and hope that her choices going forward will give her a life back.

    Best,
    Gracie

Thanks Pat, Hope you are doing OK. Dr. Skinner charges $700.00 for a consult!!! A friend has made contributions to the City of Hope and you mentioned Dr Josephson there so will try him tomorrow. The City of Hope web site lists Kaiser as a possibility of working together so will see. Thanks so much, Barb

Barbara…..i’m so sorry. Your sister has to be going through some big time depression on top of a botched surgery. I hope that USC/Norris will see her through this . I know a lot of doctors do not want to take on anothers mistakes.
I know i get a bit preachy about doctors and institutions. Bladder Cancer is so far down the list as far as research goes or any money goes and the ones out there that are performing incredible life saving surgery are really well known. The precision of the surgeon and the pathologist are so important to survival. And even with the best this is a very sneaky cancer.
I so hope she will be willing to take a second chance and that Dr. Skinner will see her.
    Pat
