    Hey all.

I just found out my dad was diagnosed with a tumor in his bladder (via an ultrasound). I’m still getting caught up on the details, but I do know he has had blood in his urine for a few months. I know it may be pre-mature to think cancerous, but I want to be prepared and informed. My father has been a heavy smoker for over 30 years, so the odds aren’t looking great right now.

I’ve got much to read / learn, but right now my biggest concern is getting him in to see a Urologist for his Cystoscopy, which hopefully tell us what we are dealing with.

What should we be asking the Urologist? If cancerous, can he determine the stage at that time?
Are their any other tests / things we should do in the meantime(besides read up on this)?

*** Edited, in my mad panic I wrote kidney, i meant bladder. I was thinking kidney, because he only has one.

Korilee…did your mother have a cystoscopy or a TURB? She won’t get any results unless she has a resection of the tumor. I just wondered about the 21st date…thats a long wait for pathology or is that the date for the TURB?
Incidently i’ll bet 70% of the people on this forum never smoked.
I wish you and your mother the best……..Pat

Hi there. I know what you are probably feeling right now, as I am in the same
situation. My Mother (57 yrs old) just underwent her cystoscopy this past Thursday
and the tumour in the lining of her bladder was relatively large. She has also
smoked for some years now, and I’m pretty certain when she meets back up
with the Urologist on the 21st of January that the news won’t be the greatest.
She apparently has had blood in her urine for quite some time now.
All we can do is stay postive, and focus on the brighter side.
I just wanted to reply to you and let you know that I’m thinking of you and
your family as I know it is tough!! :'(

Well thats a bummer…a kidney stone on top of a bladder tumor. Is the stone causing pain at the present time? In any case i would certainly ask your primary doctor for a referral to a top urologist ASAP. May i ask why only one kidney? Does he presently have a nephrologist?
Its a good guess that the bladder tumor is cancerous but its important to get the grade and stage. You can read up on the TURB procedure on the home page under newly diagnosed.

My apologies. I was just in a panic yesterday. The ultrasound revealed a bladder tumor. And from what I’ve read 80-90% of them are cancerous. Given his long history of smoking, I’m a bit worried.

I got him to go to the ER last night, and he was able to get in for a CAT scan. They found him to have a kidney stone (he only has 1 kidney)

They just did an ultrasound not a CT scan? The source of the blood could be from the kidney tumor but you certainly need to rule out bladder cancer or the source of the tumor, whether its primary or secondary. A cystoscopy will only tell if there are tumor/tumors in his bladder..a further test is a TURB which is a resection of the tumor/tumors and pathology would be able to give you grades and stages in a couple of days. Was your father refered to a nephrologist at all? I hope you can see a good urologist in a timely fashion. Are you near a major cancer center? Pat
