TURBT- what to expect
Posted by Lintay59 on January 22, 2021 at 2:18 pmI am 8 days out from TURBT and getting ready to start BCG. Have had no problems until this morning. A small streak of blood and I guess what is clots/debris, is this normal? No real discomfort

Getting ready to do my 4th BCG treatment, it has not been bad at all. There has been frequency with urination, slight burning at the end of the stream and some debris and very little blood. My first 3 treatments have been good, a little uncomfortable but not at all what I expected.

[quote=”mikequestions” post=60538]Hi Lintay59,
The BCG treatments were way less difficult for me than recovery from a turbt. It was not exactly a joyride, but was certainly less troublesome than I expected. Remember, most people who breeze though BCG don’t post anything about their experience.

I agree 100% with the above quote.
Recovery from TURBT was the hardest part for me, but, in the grand scheme of things, it was nothing compared to the alternatives.
The BCG treatments, while never listed under “fun” things to do, were not that bad. I have had no symptoms now for four and a half years.
08/16/16 – TURBT – 1 tumor, T1HG, 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.8 cm, non-invasive papillary.
BCG treatments (15 doses total – last March, 2018). As of latest cysto on June 30, 2024, cancer free!Close your eyes, and concentrate on the moment you are in, which will be doable. You don’t know what the next moment will bring, so focus on now. Know that there are people who care for you, and that there’s nothing more important than those people. When it feels overwhelming, come back to that center, and don’t ever doubt that power, and your ability to heal.
BCG is not difficult, it’s just part of your journey.
I had a rough time in recovery after turbt, guess that’s why I’m a little apprehensive about bcg. my bcg will be done and i will go home afterward. will stay close to bathroom and plenty of water. thanks so much for the encouragement

Plan on staying close to the bathroom, and drink lots of water after your first void. I was outpatient treatment for me, so I was able to go home & watch a movie for each treatment. This helped me greatly to keep my mind off of it! You’ve got this!

As I mentioned before, this is very do-able. You will be fine and every treatment brings you closer to the “all clear” for good day!!

Forum ModeratorI understand how you must be feeling right now. Being diagnosed with any kind of cancer is upsetting and bladder cancer can be even more so since until we get it most of us have never heard of it!!
I had two years of BCG treatments and have been cancer-free now for 12 years. Honestly, while BCG was not always fun, I would rather have it than go to the dentist! When you read about BCG on places such as this Forum please remember that patients who have minimal side effects don’t usually post….it is those who do have “issues” who complain. For me, particularly at first, side effects were minimal once the first 6 hours were over. Maybe a little fatigue the next day. As the instillations went on I would have urinary urgency and burning, sort of like a UTI. By the time I finished my two years my urologist had reduced the dose the 1/3 the original one.
This treatment is nothing anywhere near what friends who have had chemotherapy have gone through. And it was well worth it!!
You can do this too!!

Forum ModeratorJust really nervous about BCG. Been reading a lot about it. think I’m still reeling from the news of having bladder cancer, just trying to get a grip. thank you for responding.
Welcome Lintay59,
Yes, passing blood or some clots is pretty common after a TURB. It is the scab or area that was burned/cut during the procedure. I presume your BCG is scheduled for at least 30 days post as you want to heal from the TURB?
Ask away as you have other questions. Someone should see them and respond.
