Hi, I am new to this website and trying to learn to navigate…please bare with me!

I had a turbt procedure a week ago. Before the surgery, I asked my urologist if there were any restrictions…she said no. After the surgery I am given a list of restrictions…which is frustrating and I wish I knew before so I could be better prepared.

I have been feeling very lethargic and tired the past 3-4 days. I have no fever etc. I am just wondering if this is normal after having a turbt procedure and how long does the tiredness last???

Any thoughts from experienced folks would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi , Hope you feel better soon. After my first surgery ( they took out five tumors) I waited one day and then went skiing. ( no one told me not to , lol) I had surgery two weeks ago and told my dr I was going backpacking was that ok. He told me to wait a few days so I did. Then I went backpacking with a friend , we did about fifty miles. I was tired after this surgery but the more I hiked and sweated the better I felt. I think, I sweated all the drugs out of my system because with each mile I felt more with it. My bladder felt fine more than likely because my pack has straps that fasten across the front of me so I think they actually supported my guts better !
I sometimes wonder if the reason people have more trouble with their bladder after surgery is the skill level of the dr doing them. The more the dr does the less damage is done to the bladder. I go to John Hopkins. Rocky

Adding my 2 cents worth. Hopefully your URO told you that is normal pass a clot from the area cut on anywhere from 10-17 days past per healing. I was warned and was still shocked wondering if there were more problems-which there weren’t. As everyone else has mentioned anesthesia affects everyone differently but lethargy is common. It’s wild stuff as my wife said I basically babbled for about 12 hours-funny stuff.

The hospital did tell me some clotting was normal and I should call if I have any problems etc. I never been put to sleep before so I didn’t know from experience what to expect. I didn’t have anyone to babble to…probably a good thing, may have told something i didn’t want know, haha!!

    K,

Glad you are not experiencing anything other than being tired. Hopefully, after the weekend of the 4th, you are feeling better. Doug has always been given the restriction to not lift more than a gallon of milk for a certain period of time after a TURB. He has had 6, and fortunately, the last one was over 2 years ago. Rest and recover. Hope you feel more normal soon!

    Thank you!!

    K,
I think it kind of depends on how many tumors, location, and size and the anesthesia. I never had a reaction to any of my TURBS other than a bit of tiredness immediately after.
Where are you located? Did you have a local urologist do the procedure or did you go to a main Cancer or University Center that deals with lots of bladder cancer?

A local urologist. She does have experience doing them though.

Thanks for the feed back…I couldn’t find any info on this. I have never had surgery before outside of oral surgery. I felt pretty good the first couple of days, so I was surprised I started feeling so tired later. That is the only issue I’ve had with it Thank Goodness!!

I have had 7 procedures, and my reactions varied somewhat. But I have definitely felt lethargic for a few days after all of them. I have also experienced bladder spasms, and those can occur quite a while after the surgery — maybe a week or two later. Isolated spasms, not constant ones.

The main restriction I have had is not to exercise for 72 hours.

A lot of the after-effects seem to come from the anesthesia (or so it seems to me). I sometimes feel kind of muddle-headed for half a week after the procedure.

You sound pretty normal to me.

Any time you have general anesthesia, you can feel “un-normal” for a bit afterward. This, combined with the nerve strain, and the
procedure itself, can lead to exactly what you are feeling.

    What did the TURBT show?

I know it seems silly to be tired and lethargic when you feel no pain and there is no outside evidence of a procedure. But, there WAS a procedure. It is normal to feel this way. As your body recovers from this invasion of privacy. Now is the time to rest and recover. You probably will have a second TURB to determine if the margins are clear(they got it all)

Enjoy taking it easy for a while…… you have a good excuse indeed.

When I had my initial procedure almost 4 years ago I was tired as well and had bladder spasms for a short period of time. Because of the tumor site, I had a stent placed in for about two weeks. After a few days any side effects were tolerable. After 23 BCG treatments I am doing fine.
