  • Swelling Problems 5 weeks out of RC????

Posted by dar on October 31, 2007 at 7:36 pm

My husband Ron had his RC 9/24/07. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks due to heart problems and a bowel obstruction. After being home one week he was admitted again for a urine/blood infection and was released on Sunday. He is doing really well now. Ron has an outside bag. Although he has not had much pain (only two pain pills since leaving the hospital the first time) he is now having pain at night from his swollen scrotum. The swelling was huge right after surgery and has slowly shrunk over the weeks. The scrotum is smaller, still much larger than normal, in the mornings when he gets up. By 8:00pm it is very large/swollen again and he is in agony. The doctor said it would take awhile for it to return to normal and to keep it elevated when sitting or lying down. I would think that 5 weeks (last Monday) after surgery it would be more normal. Everything else is pretty normal now. Any thoughts??? Maybe he’s trying to do too much and not resting enough??? When can he expect it to be back to normal???

Appreciate any help you can give.

    Darlene

I had some aches (intermittent, uncomfortable, but not terrible pain) for several months. Left testicle area only. No swelling, though. Hard to say if the swelling is unique to his body or due to his surgeon. Frequent ice packs sound like a good idea – and also not stressing the area by doing too much.

I had the swelling and I would say yes it is very uncomfortable but mine went away in about 2 weeks after my surgery although they were a tad sore and tender for a bit. But I would think after a month the swelling should have gone down. Joe ;)

Hi Darlene, your husband sounds like he is on the same track as my father, except my dad had the neobladder (which I am now cursing). My dad also has the swollen scrotum (his surgery was 4 weeks ago) and this hurts him more than anything else. He was readmitted last Saturday with a blood and urine infection, and is just being released to the general wards from the CCU probably today, to continue his antibiotic treatments. While he feels and looks much better, the swelling is agony for him. He is using ice packs quite frequently on the area and that provides some relief, but he is very uncomfortable. We too have been having a hard time getting information about this and why it occurs, and why it is lasting so long. I do know that some of the men on this forum have said that they had tremendous swelling as well, while others did not.

I too will be interested in the answers that you get to this question! andrea

    Hi Dar,
Well as your pm friend I can’t help you out here, and he has the bag as Gene does, we didn’t experience the swelling scrotum. I am sure its not what he expected, another who said this would happen!!! I am sure someone more qualified will jump in soon..love to you and your hubby,,glad he’s home but not a fun way to spend the day. Tell him Gene has been on his lawnmower so there is an end in sight as you were just after us in surgery. Ginger
