My father has been in the hospital since Tuesday night and they can not seem, to get his creatinine level down past 2.1. He was definitely dehydrated but has been on IV. His potassium level was 5.5 when admitted but is down to 5.1 (still high). He is having an ultra sound today. We are very concerned now about his kidneys. If they cannot get his level down he will not be able to have more chemo. As of now, they are taking a break.

Does anyone have any experience with this? If so, how long does it usually take to lower the creatinine levels? It has been a rough week.

Mel, nephrostomy tubes are used when the ureter is blocked to drain the kidney. My husband’s ureter was partially blocked by his CIS so they put a stent in his ureter to keep the kidney draining. In this case they keep a stent in place and change it about every 3 months. They need to do one or the other to keep the kidney working. They tell me it is very painful if the kidney can’t drain and starts to swell.

As for hope I think there is always hope but what you hope for may change over time.

they are going to do that i’m sure but the results of the MRI came in after the urologist visited today…he will probably be in again Monday. What would the stent do?

this may be a dumb question…….but is there any reason they can’t go in there and re-turb the tumors in his bladder, ureter and put a stent in?

    Thank you Pat!!!

There has definitely been a setback. The MRI showed that there are tumors growing back in the bladder (my father still has his bladder because there were mets to the bone) and going up the ureters. I guess this is what is causing the blockage. I am in complete shock because a month ago we had a PET scan that showed there were no tumors in the bladder and things were looking good. Now, I feel like there is no hope again.

UPDATE: The ultrasound revealed that there is fluid around the kindney and some sort of a blockage. They are putting in a nephrostomy tube tomorrow morning for drainage. I am very unfamiliar with this. Very stressed and could use whatever input you all can offer.
