Starting chemo today.
Posted by justme on October 31, 2007 at 12:45 pmMy husband starts his chemo today. He has one today and then the big one tomorrow.
Then two weeks of just the small one and then one week off. This will go on for 3 or 4 rounds. Praying the meds will keep him from getting sick. He will lose his hair they tell him which I’m sure will be tramatic no matter how much one prepares for that.I’m trying to be a good caregiver and taking it one day at a time and this week one app’t at a time while still trying to take care of myself.
He is 71 and in relatively good health so I have faith that he will get through this just find it’s the journey I think that might be a little bumpy.
Thanks for all the post here, they’ve helped alot.

Wow Pat that has got to hurt a double whammy. But your husband has to still do what he has to do. And yes I lost my hair around week 6 about the time they said it would happen. So I just went in and shaved my head and my wife actually liked it said I had a nice round head, and she said at least you know the chemo is working. I was more tired out from it then sick but sometimes I felt a little nauseous. They give you meds for nausea in the IV on the big days and I got an oral pill on the shorter days. Pat sounds like you have alot of strength hope all goes well. Joe

I have poor memory so I don’t know if I’ve posted about his younger brother dying of stomach cancer.
[/quote]Yikes, Pat, I’m sorry to hear that. Your husband is going to need double the support and understanding if his brother is dying while he’s undergoing chemo. That is a painful situation.
I wish you and your husband a lot of strength, and also comfort to your brother in law.

Sorry….I meant to say that his chemo is post-cystectomy. He’s doing a little more poorly this week. He got a UTI and is on meds, and his blood levels are dropping, we think, because he is really tired. His doc said this week would be the worst, and he’s right, so far. He sleeps a lot, but I’d like to get him outside for some fresh air.

Well, we are finished with this weeks chemo! So far the only side effect is hicups!
He has meds for that and has taken them but last night didn’t seem to help too much, he was still doing it in his sleep but at least they didn’t keep him awake, me now that’s another story!! I just moved to the sofa and we both slept. ;)I have noticed they come on mainly when he eats or drinks anything has anyone noticed that themselves?
I have poor memory so I don’t know if I’ve posted about his younger brother dying of stomach cancer. Well, he called yesterday to tell us goodbye but haven’t heard anything today so am assuming he is still living, he is in Methodist in Rochester.
They are making him comfortable and controlling his pain but this has weighed deeply on my husband too. So I’m amazed that my husband hasn’t had anymore chemo side effects. God is good.thanks for listening

Well, i just wanted to say hi and wish you all the best. I had 3 sets of Chemo with just cisplatin, I was also told i would be wiped out and lose my hair. Wiped out, most defently, keeped ;D my hair though. My advice is to take the meds they give for sickness and such, they do work. Eat small meals but healthy ones, try and stay as active as you can.And drink plenty of liquds, as my Nurse told me, Lots of liquids, (beer dosent count, LOL ) that was her joke. Also these are the side effects i have exsperenced, Ringing in the ears, numbness in the feet, ( still going 5 months later. and of course the old stand by, CANT GET OFF THE POT!. It will be difficult but you will get through it . Best of Luck

hi stephany. my husband finished his 3rd round of chemo on oct. 22nd. he did not lose any hair, surprisingly. he was very wiped out each cycle during the cisplatin week. otherwise he went to work, played his sports, etc. each cycle, however, made him feel more tired, so by the end he was pretty wiped. so he napped when he needed to, and went in a little later to work and left a little earlier. his stomach hurt him the entire time. tell your husband to try to save his energy for the things he really wants to do and not waste it on stuff he doesn’t care about.
my husband’s RC is nov. 5th. i am expecting the pathology report to come back sometime around nov. 13th. i will let you know if the chemo worked. he had 10+ tumors, T-2, T-3.

2 sons, ages 20 and 23Stephany, is this chemo before your husbands surgery or is this his treatment after or is it just plain his treatment.
My husband’s chemo is a before surgery treatment. He seems to be doing ok today, right now he’s walking the treadmill! Tomorrow is the the big one so hopefully he’ll do as well.
I stayed with him the whole time today but tomorrow I might take a break as it’s at least 5 hours, we’ll see how it goes.
thanks for the support.
justme, patHey, justme! My husband just finished his first round of chemo, and this is his first week off. He goes back next week to start the second round. One doc told him he would loose his hair day 14, and the other doc said he wouldn’t. He hasn’t yet.
One doc told him he’d be a little wiped out, and the other doc disagreed. He’s been a little wiped out, but not necessarily from the chemo.
So, hang in there. Let us know what’s going on.

GuestOctober 31, 2007 at 2:58 pmHang in there Pat, I am sure your doing your best, the road may get bumpy so turn to those who care and ask for help when you need it. Good luck and God Bless Ginger
Hi Just-You,
I wish your husband an easy time of it. He’s lucky to have you out here learning what you can in advance, it helps, be sure of it. Despite a wide range of diagnoses, stage and types of bladder cancer represented here on the forum, there are still many things we all have in common. Like being human and needing someone to help take a load off sometimes.
Take care,
