Skin Irritations around stoma?
Posted by Herb on February 18, 2011 at 4:17 pmJust wondering if someone would share what they have done if when using a pouch and there is skin irration which is persistent after using skin powder and skin barrier — what are other procedures or products that can be used? I am using Hollister Pouches and powder and skin barrier. Irritaion is less than inch around but has not gone way in several weeks.

I have used the vinegar & water when I get any kind of blemish around stoma. I love the Marlin Pouch however, even though my insurances pay for everything, Marlin is more expensive than most of other companies. If I could find a bag that had same adhesive as Marlin I would change but have not found any (but must admit I haven’t looked very hard either). The first fire, which was behind the race track was very close [a mile], we live on opposite side of highway 70 up on a hill. The second one was several miles away behind KayBob’s Restaurant maybe that is one that got your friend’s house — all departments jumped on that one very quickly and we luckily had some tank planes at airport — they hit it so quickly that people getting out of way of fire were covered with retardent — now that is quick. I have about 40 pine trees around my house so if fire gets close I am out of here :-) Good hearing from you — Keep The Faith!!!

I may try the Marlin convex but I’ve had no leaks for about a year. Stoma nurse said I should neutralize the skin with vinegar & water 4/1. Like you. I stopped using adhesive remover except when shaving. I hate that- I need 3 or maybe 4 hands – visibility on lower side is difficult.
I checked when the fires were moving into New Mexico but saw that you were well away from the danger although a friend in Texas lost his home.
I see above that RBH was looking for the Calvion site and I believe it was part of the Hollister web site. I’ll check and post better site data.
I’m 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010Wow, it was a year ago when I was in the midst of major skin eruptions. I am happy to say they have been gone for many months now. I thank all who gave suggestions. My procedure for changing pouch (bag): Wash with ivory soap, ( stopped using adhesive remover because I found it hard to remove all traces and it led to leaks), I warm my skin with hair dyer (on low), place bag on warming pad when I am showering, if there is any redness I use small amounts of powder, then I use protective barrier around inner area where a protective ring(Convatec) is applied, then a Marlin ‘UltraMax’ per-cut convex is applied. I found protective ring and bag after contacting almost all the manufacturers who gladly send samples. I use a ReliaMed foley bag for night-time and works very well. Just wanted to say it was through the support and suggestions of members on this blog that solution was found. Just wanted to make sure I said thanks. Take Care, Herb

Whenever you hit a bad link on a product like this, try using Google (or Bing, or Yahoo, or whatever search engine you prefer) and put in as much info as you can in the search.
Try Google on “3M no sting barrier film”. You will find a ton of places where you can buy and/or read about it.

If you click up from this page you can study the entire line of “Cavilon” products.
Hm. I get a “Page not found” error there, and searching 3M’s site for “urostomy” and “ostomy” get no hits.
Great Mike — yes it is nice to have that nagging quiet worry decrease so glad you are almost clear. Take Care, Herb

My redness is also getting smaller and less worrysome. I’ll probably do one more salve treatment but also will be using bags with the “old school” adhesive. Hollister has been calling to be sure I’m progressing and my stoma nurse is online so great minds are my support system. That is a huge comfort.
I’m 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010Hopefully last post on this subject: using Doxycycline pills & Bactroban cream – Staff is gone; using Nystatin powder and proxide, fungus is gone and eye solution (too many ingredients for such small bottle to read)Pink Eye is also gone. Along with this was able to go back to regular Hollister convex bag without any adapter ring lasted 3 days and would have gone longer but wanted to take sneak a peak— stoma is now its ole smilely self. So anyone who get infections be of good cheer you can defeat the little buggers!

Lost Dad and Brother to Cancer both in their 50’s.Well got busy and forgot to make an entry here: alll three infections are getting better, almost gone — Infectious Disease Doc’s never got in touch with me — I am sure they were just too busy :-) but luckily Stoma Nurse was correct backed up Primary Care Physician we have just about won the battle; healed up enough that regular convex bad is on third day with out adapter ring. Whooppee!
Age 72 had radical 9/11/10 have conduit everything is fine, grateful to be a cancer survivor. Lost Dad and Brother to Cancer both in their 50’s.My stoma nurse took a different approach and got me a Rx salve “Nyststin/Triamcinolone cream”. This is rubbed well into the skin before applying the bag.
I did a little surfing and found the Nystatin is to control fungus and the Triamcinolone is for other skin irritations. I’m on my 2nd bag with this routine and showing very encouraging improvement.
I’m 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010For three months I did not have to use any barrier — simply had to find combination of bag and fitting to work which was difficult at first as it is for many because stoma kept changing — finally stopped at a 7/8’s but definately was an ‘inny’ so ended up with convex fitting which also needed the adapter ring. Have had to use caking with present infection — culture still out but looks like I have both fungis and a staff, gee two for the price of one. Well one step at a time thanks for reply glad things are going well.
Age 72 had radical 9/11/10 have conduit everything is fine, grateful to be a cancer survivor. Lost Dad and Brother to Cancer both in their 50’s.Hi
In the beginning I had difficulty getting appliances to stick and had inexperienced nurses. One method used was the caking desribed. It quickly made my peristomal skin more irritated and painful.
I found the my skin does best with first making sure it is dry before appling a single layer of barrier. I change appliances every 3 days. This has been working well for 3 + months now.
I hope all gets better soon :) HollyYes, was told many years ago by a dentist, I lost all my teeth at age of 30, he said, Herb put them in your mouth, don’t use aqnything to hold them because your tongue is quickest and stringest muscle you have and if you leave them in your body will adopt them as if they are part of the body — his advice worked, my wife did not know I had dentures until one of my kids let out the secret. Did same thing with heaqing aides, contacts, glasses and it has always worked — I done same with the bag, inclusing hose and foley at night and 90% of the time it works — still have some of those 4 letter words when I pull tube lose or when one of the bags lets me know it can still try to be the boss.
All my healthcare folks are working on the problem and I will let you know if their collective wisdom and knowledge takes the itchy owness out my life. Take Care, Herb Robbins (Mature [maybe]retired Padre)
Age 72 had radical 9/11/10 have conduit everything is fine, grateful to be a cancer survivor. Lost Dad and Brother to Cancer both in their 50’s.Because these bags are to be with us the rest of our lives we must of necessity become experts on it’s care. I’m only now (at 9 months) excepting that fact. When you came to the group I was having HUGE problems with my mind in this respect. A little known fact is that you modified my relationship with my bags. That is I don’t use exactly the same 4 lettered words when I shout at my leaking bag!
I look on these little hiccups in our relation with our bags as a diversion from the total picture which can be daunting at times (even for a man of your strong background).
So stay strong and keep posting to our collective knowledge bank.

Be careful!!! I am not sure how long it takes for a fungus to be cured. But, I would think just a few days isn’t enough. Hope it gets better soon! Then maybe try the caking part on areas that are more sensitive. Just a thought. Sure am glad Jim hasn’t had a fungus
