I had a neobladder installed on September 4, 2004. Hence, I have had several post op examinations. I am now on six month cycles. During these examinations I have had chest x-rays, blood work, and abdomen and pelvic CT scans. Never have I had any urine analysis work done post op. I am now scheduled to have my sixth month checkup next week and, once again no scheduled urine analysis.

My question, is this normal? Or should I question why this analysis is not being done?
Seems to me I have read in posts in the other bladder cancer café that they are still having the FISH test done post radical cystectomy / neobladder. .

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Gordon

2 days worth….i’ll be interested in knowing the tests…i remember sort of all the blood work, a test to determine my capacity of the bladder and i’ve forgotten the name of that test, and thats about all i remember. My follow up CT and chest x-ray were not until 6 months. But then i did not have any infected nodes nor chemo so the protocal might be different.
I’ve never been quite happy with them not doing urine analysis…but hey i live in a place where they don’t even know what i have!!!…. Pat

    Hi Gordon and Pat,

I go back for 3 month check soon and I am scheduled for a urine cytology among the battery of tests. In all honesty – I am sceheduled for tests that I am not even sure what they all are – but I am sure Mayo’s has good reasons for 2 days worth.

    Hi Pat,

I have a call in to my clinic now for their explanation. Seems like they would do the analysis to check for possible cancer cells from above the bladder, i.e. ureters and kidneys. Although your explanation makes sense too. I do recall having tests done post op re: possible infection in bladder, but not the FISH test, etc.

Thanks for your quick response. I’ll keep you posted. :)

Hi Gordon…….i’m 4 l/2 yrs out with an Indiana Pouch and i’ve never had a urine analysis…..something to do with the controversy of what exactly the PH factors should be…and the fact that because the new bladder is part of the intestine and produces muucus it also has bacteria that will send the lab into a frenzy. That was my explanation……….Pat
