Home Forums All Categories Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer PET scan results

Just got off phone with the doc thirty minutes ago. Lymph nodes appear to be cancer. Not easy to biopsy because of blood vessels in the area. Lymph node up in my chest area is also lit up on PET scan. That indicates spread which is not good news.

Surgery to remove kidney would not be curative so he doesn’t recommend that. He is working on getting me in with an oncologist this week at the University of Colorado Hospital. They are top in the area. I am researching them now.

Looks like I have to go on chemo. I don’t know the ramifications of that yet in terms of the schedule, side effects, impact on being able to work during treatment or the efficacy of that treatment for this.

More to come once I know.

Certainly not what was hoped for but not the end of the world either. I guess I will now learn more about chemo so maybe I will be able to add value to the forum in this area as I was not able to before.

Frankly, I’d rather have studied it as opposed to having to go through it myself but it is what it is and you play the hand you are dealt.

I’m going to start a new thread over in the area I was hoping to not have to be in…Metastatic.

Mike, I’m sorry to hear of your recent dx. You are always there to help other members on this board and you are an inspiration to us all. It sounds like you have a great team of doctors working with you. They are taking the time to ask the right questions before starting treatment, which is great news. Please keep us posted, I will be thinking of you.

    Mike,
I just posted on your prior thread. Still trying to catch up here.
Sorry. You were one of the first to help me when I came here in 2009, and I am still grateful, as I am sure many of the people you have helped are. Seems like there should be more we could all do to help you. Just want you to know I am thinking of you and your family.

Thanks again Mark! I appreciate the information. By sheer coincidence that is the website I spent my time researching. Thanks for confirming it is the right one!

I will update everyone on Tuesday when I know more.

I don’t claim to be a chemo expert, but I am a hospital pharmacist so I do know a little about cancer therapy and treatment . I know renal cancers are resistant to standard chemo regemines in a lot (but not all) cases. There are targeted therapies to use in those cases that can prove quite effective. I would have to defer to the experts as to picking one therapy over another. Your in a good position going where you are and having a team of experts to guide your therapy. Here’s a website I use sometimes to verify treatment regemines and doses of drugs when I see them. It’s not all inclusive and any ongoing trials probably wont be listed there, but it is a good starting point.

That is exactly the question we are trying to resolve Mark. I will update once I hear the outcome from the RB (Review Board).

It sounds like you are in good hands and are keeping your spirits up. That’s going to be important as you go through this.

I was wondering if they are calling this a reocurrance of bladder cancer or a new case of renal cancer. That could make a difference in treatment. Renal cancer may be treated with a new targeted drug where as bladder cancer would probably be treated with a more conventional chemo regemine. Either way it sounds like they want to nail down the final diagnosis before they determine the treatment plan. That’s a good thing even though the waiting part for lack of a better word sucks.

My wife’s name is Susie, but I suspect that given a little time he could guess my name and my wife’s name with the cousin information and my login name. But I’m sure he’s got much more important business to attend to.

We’ll put in a word for you. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Yes, that’s him. SO…have your wife call him and tell him to extra special care of me. :D

    :woohoo:

I will take every advantage I can find. You betcha!

    Mike

What’s your wife’s name? Just her first name because we don’t want to disclose too much on the site here.
I will mention her to him when I see him next week.

Is that Dr. ‘Tom’ Flaig you are working with? I think so and that’s quite a coincidence: he’s my wife’s cousin. I knew he was a doctor but I didn’t know his specialty. He could be a resource for me but I’m hoping my case doesn’t progress and I don’t need to talk to him other than socially. He’s really bright and I’d have a lot of confidence in him if he were treating me. Best of luck to you.

Mike, it’s great that you are going to a tumor review board or review board. That way you get all the various specialties input. Jims case went to tumor board 3 times so it seems to help to have all those minds working on your case. As you know, Jim was pretty far along when diagnosed. So, keep on keeping on.

It’s great that your doctor is willing to participate in ABCLS Love those docs who will. Take care and keep on keeping on.
