Pain after cystoscopy….
Posted by Imndnile on December 29, 2007 at 2:44 pmThis journey all started with a burning pain when I urinate after a months worth of antibotics the percived bladder/ prostate infection(urine samples never showed any infection) the pain still persited. My Doctor sent me to a Urologist he to ran the same urine test and found no infection but did find microscopic blood. He then sent me in for a cat scan to which they saw somthing (an unsal polyp ?) I dont recall what he said. He then scheduled and performed the Cystoscopy.(Patholgist report indicates CIS). BCG treatments are scheduled to start on the 14th.
I had these procedure done on the 13th of December and it still hurts to pee some time worse than others, sometimes I see some blood at the end. The doctor has given me Prosed/DS to which does nothing except to make my pee a pretty blue, and several different antibiotics. last urine sample (12/21) showed no infection. I called him on Thursday to tell him it still hurts and I was seeing blood and he just gave another prescription for antibotics and had me schedule an appointment for next week.
At these point I wish I had never complained about the first symptoms of pain from urinating back in October. The pain now is ten times worse.
That about covers it up to to my question today…
How long does this pain go on for?
What can do or take to ease the pain?
Thanks for any answers. IMNDNILE (as long as I dont tell anyone I can pretend this isn’t happening).

Cancer has invaded muscle getting RC.I also had a TURB on 12/3/07 and still have some minor bladder spasms. I had a stent for two weeks that increased the urgency. So it has taken at least 4 weeks for my pain to become tolerable. My tumor was 4 cm and I still take Urelle 4 times a day with a antibiotic once a day. I also have lost some of my taste for certains foods.
JoeIMNDILE:
Sounds like you had both a TURBT to remove tumors and perhaps a TURP to remove a small portion of your prostate for biopsy purposes. I went thru the same procedure back on 11/30 and the doc removed a bit of the enlarged prostate which was encroaching on one of the CIS or Papillary tumors. That’s over four weeks ago and I’m still experiencing pain, burning, occasional small bits of tissue and blood, especially at the end of urination. I’ve had more of these symptoms this time than on the first couple of TURBTs and I’ve been told that the main reason is the prostate resection which may cause bleeding and sloughing of tissue for up to six weeks. You are correct — Prosed doesn’t help, but heavy doses of ibuprofen or tylenol do help for a little while. Good luck!

I’m a 49 YO Male with a recent diagnosis of CIS
I had a TURB on 12/17/07 and I’m still having pain and occasional urgency when urinating although it seems to be a little less each day. After my procedure I was unable to pee so I left the Hospital with a Foley Cath.. I had the foley in for 3 days and had quite a bit of pain from it. 6 days after the TURB my pain level increased so I called the Urologist who renewed my prescription for Pyridium but would not renew a script for Tylenol with codine which had been providing good relief. He also perscribed Cipro for possible UTI.
Starting 0n 12/28 I’ve been using just Tylenol with OK results

M. RunbeckImndnile,
Hi! Sorry I didn’t respond sooner…Pat told me that perhpas I cold help you out since I am located in Seattle area. Maybe I can suggest to you a couple of other doctors. I work in Everett, and live in Mt. Vernon, but had my surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center.
I had my first cysto. done last March by a urologist in Edmonds, a Dr. John Maldazys….had no pain afterwards nor bleeding….two days later he did the TURB but could not get all the tumor as it was muscle invasive…had no pain nor bleeding afterwards. He had no bed side manner but very probably a decent surgeon. But as I didn’t like what he had to say…I ended up going on for a 2nd and 3rd opinion as Maldazys recommended me for 3-4 months of chemo and then bladder removal. I was not prepared for that diagnosis….as it turned out all three oncologists and sugeons I saw, all agreed on that treatment.
I ended up having my surgery done by Dr. Paul Lange, who is head of Urology, UW Medical Center. He also is lacking in bed side manner but he has done lots of bladder surgeries and I was looking for someone who did them on a regular basis. Dr. Lange does not give women a neobladder as he believes there is too high a percentage who leak so I was given the Indiana Pouch and so far, so good….that was five months ago.
Since you are in the Kirkland area, I would suggest you contact a Doctor T. Pritchett, who works at Virginia Mason, if he is on your insurance list….his phone no. is 206-223-6178. I called his office one afternoon and he called me back later that day, about 6:30 p.m. and spent 30 minutess answering my questions…I was quite impressed since most doctors aren’t nearly so responsive even when we have an actual appointment with them. I have a male friend (early 60’s)who had his surgery done by Dr. Pritchett, he was given a neobladder two years back and is very happy with the results. I would strongly encourage you to call him.
I think that would be more personal than going to UW. I spent 11 days at the hospital following surgery and during my stay, doctors and nurses were great. It was after discharge that I felt they kinda dropped the ball…the patient really has to be very pro-active to ensure follow up happens as it should.
Please feel free to PM me if you wish…will PM you and give you my email and phone number if you wish more info. Take care, Melodie

Each time I’ve had a cystoscopy I’ve had pain for several hours, and irritative symptoms that last 1-2 weeks. Unfortunately, just about any part of the lower urinary tract (bladder, prostate, urethra) can cause the same type of symptoms when irritated or inflamed, and while it might be a good idea to be on antibiotics prophylactically to prevent infection, depending on what’s going on, it absolutely drives me nuts that my colleagues (I’m a pediatrician) think every urinary symptoms is a UTI. I had two episdes of pain and urinary symptoms this past year due to inflammation of a urethral stricture (something you should not have from having been instrumented only once). Of course, antibiotics didn’t help, but it didn’t stop my urologist form thinking it had to be a UTI. My symptoms took a month to resolve each time, but it also took at least a week from the start of symptoms to get to the point of having my stricture dilated.
As regards bleeding, I’ve always started passing clots about a week after any biopsies or surgical procedures and then taking 1-2 weeks to clear up.
If you’re having bladder spasms (a frequent burning urge to urinate) a more potent antispasmodic than what is in Prosed might help such as Detrol. If you have irritation in the bladder, perhaps pyridium (which will turn your urine orange and looks really freaky when combined with the blue – I’ve been there :P ) might help. If the irritation is coming from your prostate or urethra, bladder meds do little good. If you’re having awful pain and a pain reliever like ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) doesn’t help, consider asking your doctor for a narcotic pain reliever. BTW, ibuprofen is anti-inflammatory and might be beneficial if taken around the clock and not just when in pain, but it is irritating to the stomach and might require you to take an antacid or even Pepcid or Zantac.

12/13/07GuestDecember 29, 2007 at 6:01 pmWell it sounds to me like you had a TURB in a hospital setting and you were put under anesthesia?? true.? As you have a pathology report they obviously resected the tumor. Depending on where you’re located you can pick up that report from the hospital where you had the TURB done…just call and tell them you want it and let us know what it says. It may be time for a second opinion. Personally i never had any problems after two TURBS…no bleeding, no pain, no spasms…maybe the skill of the surgeon? Where are you located? Pat
Sorry that you are in pain. It is normal to pee blue with Prosed/DS.
If you had a TURB surgery, it is common to experience spasms for a few weeks.
If you did have the surgery, were you given discharge information, including advise on when to call a doctor for certain post op symptoms? If your pain is intolerable and causing you distress do you think it would be worth going to the ER today.
You could make an appointment with your uro or doctor, write down a list of questions. Tell your doctor what you have said here and ask for explanations. Keep a record and come back to the forum with anything you are unsure of.
People on this forum are extremely supportive and will want to help. I am sure others will reply to your concerns.
Hope you feel better soon.
Maria xxxI am a 47 year old male. Maybe I dont know the proper terms for everything as this is all new to me.
as for what all occured I am not sure I was told after the Cystoscopy that was something removed from my bladder near the prostate as well as several samples collected and sent to a patholigist? sorry do not have more details as I did know of this site and put my faith in the doctor. He is the one who gave the web address for this site. He said would give me a copy of the patholigst report but I forgot to get this from him the last time I saw him.

12/13/07Dear DNILE,
Are you male or female? It’s hard to tell from your post.
Because you are having some blood at the end, I wouldn’t guess that the pain is coming from spasms. I wonder if it could be a stricture, though I’m thinking this is uncommon.
You say you had a cystoscopy that included a biopsy? This would be highly unusual.
Are you sure that you did not have a TURB under anesthesia? This would make more sense.Just guessing here, but I’m a little unclear about some of the issues.
Just to let you know that I care,
Rosemary
