One Question About Pain
Posted by tahoemom on May 1, 2008 at 2:14 pmIs there any pain to consider when the tumors are removed? I forgot to ask that ???
I know maybe painful urination…last time I had that, but in the bladder itself. Thanks for any light you can shed on this

:-* Thanks marie .. I know what to expect if it goes like he says it will. But since I didn’t ask about pain issues, thought I’d better ask :)

Hi tahoemom,
I had 3 TURBTs last year and two days after the first one I had a toilet full of blood…my doc had told me that some bleeding was normal, but I did not expect this amount and went to emergency, only to be told that it was ok – can happen after a TURBT. Other than that, I did not have much in the way of discomfort after the TURBTs and was up and about the next day.
Good luck,
Marie -
tahoemom,
I like Pat, never had any physcial pain as a result of my TURB….not immediately following the surgery or even later. I went come with a cath and had to keep it for five days before it was removed…that was a bit uncomfortable, just the idea of a bag of pee connected to my ankle most of the day was annoying…I drink lots of liquids so I was having to quite often empty the bag. Also, the hospital forgot to give me an over night bag and so the first night home I was unable to sleep for fear that the ankle bag wouldn’t hold my flow…so I was up during the night. Be sure they give you an over night bag so you don’t have that worry. Melodie
Melodie, Indy Pouch, U.W.Medical Center, Seattle, Dr. Paul H. Lange & Jonathan L. WrightIve had pain on urination a month after a TURBT. Even longer occasionally. If you’re concerned then do seek medical advice but I don’t think your timescale sounds outrageous in my experience. The recovery rate from this invasive procedure is hugely variable. Once I was told, after having a bladder neck tumour removed, to brace myself as this was a particualrly “spicy” location to have one removed from. I panic-bought gallons of cranberry juice and pain meds. It turned out to be a total damp squib and was the easiest TURBT I ever experienced. On another occasion I had a tiny tumour resected that the surgeon described as barely worth removing. The after effects of sharp urine infections, digging my toes into the concrete when I peed, seemed to last for months. Maybe it’s the skill of the surgeon. Maybe they let the students “have a go” when you’re under (they’ve got to start somewhere I guess!). In any case, in my broad experience, though you can safely say that a big tumour should give you more grief, it’s still partly a lottery. Hang in there.

Now I am a little concerned…I am glad that you all have had minimal pain. But I had my surgery on 4/17 and still have a little pain. I think I tolorate pain well, especially after years of endometriosis. The pain I feel is on the left side of my urether (sp?) that is constent. when I urinate the pain increases and sometimes it feels like a bladder infection. but my urine has been checked and I did not have one. After the surgery I was given peridium and something for spasms (which I can’t take because it knocks me out for a couple of days) I called my Dr’s nurse before I left town tuesday and she said to just watch the fever (that I am still having a little) and sometimes the pain can last longer. Granted the 1st weekend was the worst and the pain now it just like a metal rod poking me all the time.
Has anyone else had this?
GuestMay 2, 2008 at 11:12 pmI had absolutely no discomfort whatsoever…of any kind…..so there’s one success story for you…….Pat
I have some anti-spasm meds from the first time , and I always drink cranberry juice.
The main complaint the first time was blood clots , and the uro told me he intends that not happening to me again. He was very angry that I had to unnecessarily go through all that.I tolerate pain well, so should be ok. Plus cannot tolerate most pain meds. I practice mind control usually and it works well for a lot of the pains I have had except extreme operations.
I’m feeling more and more optimistic :)
Tim — Thanks for jogging my memory. I had a medicine called Phenazopyrid (200mg)
that is a generic for Pyridium that handled any stinging in my two turbts. —

i think you should be prepared for the possibility of some discomfort. I had over 40 turbts prior to my cystectomy. some were really quite painful afterwards – particularly as mentioned above, during urination post-procedure – and some I was astonished to find left me with little problem. Im a man so it’s probably different for us as our urethras are a lot longer amongst other factors. my advice would be to have some cranberry juice to hand as this absoloutely reduced the stinging sensation by neutralising acidity in the urine. also, if you can, take pain meds as a prevention for pain. getting rid of pain, in my experience is harder than stopping it in the first place. your doctor should be able to advise you about anti-spasmodics for the bladder. I never used them but they are available. hopefully everything will be fine but prepare for the possibilities and you’ll do ok.
all the best

I can live with that :) I feel a little more at ease now. Thanks so much .
Hi — There can be bladder spasms. In my experience, if I had them, they didn’t last even 1/2 minute. — Susan
Thanks granpa :)
So glad no pain. ;D Sure sounds like there would have been, eeeeeeek !
I will have a cath , he says. His way to make sure I don’t stop up ,I guess. Don’t mind it too much , long as it is just a few days.
