BCG is a tuberculosis vaccine that makes your immune system kick it and fight any cancer cells. It’s installed in your bladder by a catheter and you hold it for an hour or two. They usually do it once a week for 6 weeks. I just finished my 6th one with hardly any side effects.
    Good luck!

I heard two options , one day or 5 days. If it’s only a day or two, that’s not bad. What is the BCG?

    XOX,

Always hard to have a precise reply, but it seems that you MAY have described the least desirable after procedure plan.

Every TURBT (Trans Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumor)which sounds like what is planned has the possibility of bleeding afterwards. If there is bleeding, or if the doc thinks there might be, in my case, I go home with a catheter, and I schedule an appointment the next day. If clear of blood, out with the catheter. If I’m still bleeding it stays in for another day or two or until bleeding is minor. Everyone hates the catheter – only thing worse is no catheter if you do have bleeding and clotting.

Be sure to ask that you be sent home with a bed bag – bigger bag, with a long tube that sits by the side of the bed – much more comfortable overnight.

I am newly diagnosed also. The cystoscope showed a small tumor , earlier ct scan indicated benign cyst or tumor. My urologist is scheduling a biopsy and I am told they usually remove any abnormal growth on the bladder wall after doing biopsy. I saw the video but couldn’t see anything. I am most concerned about the catheter and urine bag that I am told I need to wear for a week until bladder heals. How was this procedure for you?

    Jeez !!1
All this fussin and mental anguish over a little tiny little thing.

YES! of course you are allowed to Fear the Worst. It is normal.
What is also normal is to get your wife out of the bathroom and have a good cry together.
You are a team! Together. The patient is not so special that he gets special treatment and the caregiver cries in the bathroom. You guys are the TEAM. You cant beat this alone and it is a mutual support system.

Oh! And I noticed the change from October to August happened in only one hour!
    Sometimes things work out.

And, By the way! I think you will have a VERY Good chance of being a cancer Survivor for a VERY Long time!!!!

    We are counting on you.

Hang in there. Your TURB isn’t far off. FWIW I had “phantom/or real” aches and pains for a few days prior and several months after my TURB also. I am certain they were simply normal stiff muscles and tight joints-normal aging but, going through BC made me super aware to these things. One observation that is good for you. 2 CM is actually considered on the small side with 3CM being larger in tumor grades.

Tumor is only 2cm. CT shows no spread, yet I have aggravating ache in my pelvic area, cramp like. Not bad, but worries me. CNt wait for TURBT and the pathology to finally know stage and grade. I hate not knowing who my enemy is.

I’m so glad to read that you were able to schedule your appointments for this month. Waiting until October would have been mental torture for you and your family, and it might have also impacted your diagnosis. By far, it was the waiting and wondering that were the hardest part for me. Once I knew what I was dealing with and had a treatment plan in place, things improved dramatically. I still stress a bit from time to time, but nothing like in the first few weeks.

As a few folks have already said, bladder cancer is ‘highly treatable’. There are several treatment paths and options available. I know it’s much easier said than done, but you should try to breathe and relax.

Take care of you and keep us posted,
    LillianG

    MB,

I hope, for the sake of sanity, that the appointment is for the 10 and 18th of August. Waiting seems to be a common (and very unwelcome) story in BC treatment.

Sometimes there is a reason for the time between events. After some procedures, such as a TURBT, there needs to be time for the bladder to heal. After some treatments it takes time for the bladder to calm down before evaluating the results.

I am not sure that some doctors understand that we are climbing the walls by our fingernails and we want to know what is happening. Any doc who says the word “cancer” should feel an ethical obligation to get answers ASAP and keep us informed at all times. Hang in there.

At the VA. Only two urology surgeons on staff and booked out to October. Trying to go Choice sooner. Also going back on Tricare Prime but that don’t take effect until September 1. By the time I get into to a ne PCM and get referred, it’ll take longer than waiting till October.

The longer wait might be OK….but then again, it might not. I second Alan’s suggestion that you see someone else….
