    Julie,

GREAT NEWS! CONGRATS. on your path. report and the fact you will NOT have to do chemo. so you can spend all of your energies recovering from the RC.

I hope things settle down soon and you can get some sleep. My spouse is also a tummy sleeper and swears he would not be able to sleep any other way, so I feel for you. But, you will learn to sleep differently…you will adjust as need be. And I’m in agreement on the yogurt thing if you can tolerate yogurt…and if not, then mix it in a blender with protein drink…or even ice cream. :) I’ll won’t call you now as I know how exhusting recovery is but feel free to contact me when and if you feel the need. Hugs & God bless.

Hey Julie..double edged sword huh…take one thing and get another. Bactrim definately can cause diarhea and nausea and an assortment of other things. I Always eat yogurt when on an antibiotic of any kind to keep the good bacteria in there…i let them fight it out!!! Just so long as its not bloody or excessively watery……..
    feel better……pat

I think it is the antibiotics!! I was on augmentin then when the culture came back the doctors started me on Bactrim. I have a few more days of antibiotics and then they think the loose stools will stop. You guys had already figured this out that why I love you all GOOD MINDS!!!!

The other thing that can wreak havoc on the guts is antibiotics. It can kill off the good bacteria in the gut. Consider having some yoghurt (if you can stand the stuff) or acidophilus to repopulate the good bacteria in the intestines.

I also found that the pain pills can cause problems with sleep.

I also had the loose stool issue and quite often every day. When I got out of the hospital the orders were small meals but more often. My assumption was that was all my system would be able to handle. Try smaller meals and talk to your doc about what may be better/worse to eat right now while your system figures out what has happened.

CONGRATULATIONS on no lymph node involvement and no chemo needed! That is terrific news.

Pretty amazing that you can eat that much…i had no appetite after surgery. You will get the reflux eating that big a meal after such a drastic surgery. Don’t you have the long tubing and the bag you can place on the floor ? I could sleep on my side easily with the long tubing. My meals consisted of a Venti Mocha with whole milk in the morning compliments of my hubby. He would get it the night before and put in the fridge and i’d warm it up on the microwave. Around noon i ate a couple of eggs to get my protein….a banana ( which is good for stopping the diahhrea) and my evening meal was very light…sometimes just mac and cheeze or soup or noodles or a baked potato. I found meat impossible to digest.
I have a two story house so most of my exercise consisted of climbing those stairs…no mean task!! What meds are you currently on? Some can have potential to cause diarhhea.
    Feel better……….pat

Well the phenergan worked for me..made me sleepy but that was ok……i used the Ativan when i got home as i still got daily bouts for a while.’
How are Julies blood panels..i know they check them every day as i was sure they thought i was a pincushion before they let me out of there. Make sure potassium is ok…that can cause a lot of nausea if too high. Sometimes i think they just do the tests and never read them.
What is the consistency of the diarhhea…? Is it mucus, is it like coffee grounds..*thats what i had at first which was old blood coming out from the surgery……
One would wonder what could possibly be coming out at all after the bowel prep…unless he didn’t do one?
Make them change the nausea meds. Jump up and down and scare them a bit..it gets their attention.

Julie – This is Melodie – have called your house last couple of days to find out how you were doing – didn’t think to check here – dah ! Anyway, when I had my RC, I wasn’t able to hold anything down and nothing worked for me, then I asked for some Ativan…my hospital apparently didn’t usually give Ativan, but when I asked for it, they did give it to me. I guess some feel it is addictive but I never had any problem with it. I took it prior to surgery when I was doing chemo and found it worked better for me than anything else….I was 6 or 7 days post op by the time I finally got the Ativan and went home on day 10.

Hope your family got the message I left on Saturday – suggesting they go out and find you some “cute” and “soft, comfy” men’s boxer shorts to wear for the trip home. When I was discharged from the hospital I had tubes and a Foley catheter connected to me and could not wear any panties so I left the hospital with no underwear on. Another Indy pouch friend, Robin, here in Seattle suggested men’s boxers and I think it’s a great idea.

You continued to remain in my prayers. I hope things soon turn around for you and you will on your way home…with pillow on tummy. Hugs,

I can’t tell from the posts if the intetines have started moving yet. Perhaps the diaharreah is just the lower bowel kicking out mucous. I can definitely remember the intestines starting to waken up because the gas is definitley painful at first. Others who I’ve spoken to reported the same thing. I’d venture that the gas moving through is not something you’ll miss. Until then, most places will keep you off liquids ands certainly off solids.

    Hi Pat,

This is Julie’s husband Tom filling in. Julie is getting zolfran (when julie specifically asks for it) but it has not been all that effective.

    Thanks Mike,

Yes my surgery was this last wednesday the 27th. and at this point i’m not able to tolerate small sips of water (even ice chips) without nausea and diarreha. THe nurses are expecting about 10 day in the hospital, and that I won’t be discharged until I’m eating a regular diet.

Well the good news is the bowels are working…hope the bad news isn’t C-diff. Wait for the culture.
As for nausea…yep…had lots of that and it continued after i went home on and off. They should give you some Zofran for that. They didn’t have that particular drug when i was in and i got phenergan for it and later some Ativan which was effective and didn’t turn my urine orange. So don’t be shy…ask for the anti-nausea meds. It just comes with the territory for some.
Ask them if you can have clear liquids yet and see if you can keep it down.
    hang in there moma!!
