  • Mom newly diagnosed…need to know steps

Hello everyone. My Mom recently had a TURBT and it was diagnosed as a high grade urothelial cancer. We are in the NY area, but procedure and pathology were performed in a smaller hospital. Recommendations are for a CT scan of both lungs and bones and bladder removal if scans are negative.

Wondering if we should wait for those results before making an appointment for a second opinion? Thinking Sloan Kettering is our best choice but not sure how long it takes to see one of the top docs. Also, does anyone know typically if chemo is recommended before or after bladder removal?

Mom is in her 80’s and will be considered high risk as she has heart issues and diabetes. We are all just in shock as to all of this, and want to know the best way to proceed?

Thank you so much for your help!

Jen, With the complication of your mothers age I would call now and get yourself in the cue for the second opinion. Here is the link to their contact page http://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/adult/bladder

Chemotherapy can be done before or after Radical Cystectomy it depends on your doctors preference and your mothers situation.

I am sorry your family is dealing with all of this but we are here if you need us,please keep us updated.
