Is a month too long for biopsy after cytoscopy?
My 51 year old husband had a cytoscopy today and the urologist identified a “large tumor” on the left side of the bladder. In answer to our question, the Dr. said similar tumors are typically malignant. We like this doctor. Due to a planned absence, the Dr. is not available for the biopsy until 03-04-15. The Dr. offered names of other urologists to schedule an earlier date for biopsy. In answer to our question, he indicated the month wait was not likely to impact the outcome. My husband first noticed blood in his urine about a month ago and has since received a course of antibiotics for possible urinary infection, a regular CT scan when a thickened bladder wall was diagnosed, a contrast CT scan and now cytoscopy. In hindsight, in recent months, there has been a need to urinate in the middle of the night. We have confidence in the Dr. But we have to be our own best advocates. I welcome feedback on experiences with wait times before the biopsy procedure and feedback on potentially finding a different Dr. While the waiting adds to the anxiety, it allows time for research and making some planning decisions. I am sure that there are a number of Specialists in Bladder cancer in the area you live. Someone here will throw out a number of choices.
I just wanted to add my 1 cent in on the need for a bladder cancer specialist. Even though the urniary tract starts with the bladder and goes through the prostate, it is still another area of expertise.
As to the wait time…… If your regular Dr says he will give you names of others Drs. then he is very quietly saying “you need to attend to this quicker than I can”So take his advice and get a good Dr to do the first TURB and get the pathology results. They will do a second TURB to see if they got it all. And then they will decide on a course of action for you. From nothing….. to Bladder removal and everything in between.

Thank you for your reply. We live in Maryland, about 65 miles from DC and 90 miles from Baltimore.

Welcome and sorry you have to be here but, there are many caring survivors of this disease willing to share experiences. While none of us are doctors, a month probably isn’t too long but, for my $$$ get after this. I was lucky, after a week checking for a UTI my URO scheduled a CT Scan within a few days, a cystoscope then a TURB all in about 12 days. If you are near a good teaching hospital or major center that has a specific bladder cancer department all the better. So many do mostly prostatic cancer and you don’t want that as this is a “sneaky” cancer-often under staged. As I live in Texas, MD Anderson is my backup. What state do you live in? Someone should have a recommendation.
DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.Sign In to reply.
