I have the Indiana Pouch and I had 2 UTI’s in 4 months could be worse but I don’t want any. My insurance was paying for 8 Catheters a month this is absurd when you need to use 5-6 times daily so you gotta clean and boil them to get through the month. With the help of my wife a nurse, and a nurse at Penn, and my surgeon writing a note, and the lady at my supplier down the road from me I am getting pre-lubed Catheter Kits 180 a month so now I never have to reuse a catheter again a real nice Christmas present of course a better one of been to still be able to point and aim but that’s history. Cheers, Joe ;)

I did find a nice answer to rinsing the catheters, if you need to reuse them during the day. You can get pre-loaded sterile saline in 3 ml syringes. (The nurses call them a “push”, I think). They are individually packaged, without any needles, and several can go in your “pack”. They fit the end of the catheters, and can be used and tossed. And you know you are using sterile water.

and make sure you are not using the same tube of lubricant for more than a day, too. This is what my husband was doing until I found out. I think that contributed to his problems with UTIs. Or maybe that’s wishful thinking. He’s still on the Catalyst.

Joe: I read your situation with these caths a while back and was amazed that you were forced to re-use something that from what you wrote states “Disposable, Do Not ReUse” – Hello, no wonder insurance companies are the richest on the planet! Next we will get issued a roll of TP a week and can hang it out to dry for re-use!
I am so glad that you got this settled and you can look forward to moving on without infections.

Here’s wishing you and your wife a wonderful Christmas Joe and the greatest of 2008’s! Take care, Sandra

    Joe,
Good for you! Sorry you had to deal with infections like that. It’s really strange how the insurance companies determine how many catheters we get…I’m betting no one at the insurance office who makes those calls have ever had to cath themselves. :) You were getting 8 a month, my insurance gives me 10…another gal I know only gets 4 a month…. ::) Yikes! I do not boil me. I was told by the hospital nurses to wash in soapy water, rinse in warm water and let dry…so far I know, I am doing OK. I probably cath 7-9 times every 24 hour. Melodie
