hi i am 54 years old female.had invasive bladder cancer, surgery for neo bladder oct 2011.Everything went fine,no complications.Neo bladder worked great for 4 months.I was so grateful. Then a hernia develop and the neo stopped working, need to use catheter 5- 6 times a day.Doctor told me it might work after they repair the hernia but this is to sure.I would like to know if something like this happened to somebody else.could take 3 for 4 months yet to get this surgery, wondering if this will affect the chance of bladder to work again,i heard about flopped neo maybee that what happened to me.I am going for follow up this Monday for scan and see the doctor who will do this hernia repair.Another surgery.always stressful to wait for this.very glad i found this site, you see you are not alone in this world with bladder cancer.what a shock when they tell you those news,i tought it was just a infection like usual.wouf… i had kimo after surgery because out of 6 lympnodes, there was one with cancer cells. the doctor was very surprised when the resuls came back to him everything seem good, this never showed on the scan,so i guess it will not show again,so you never know if all this is gone or not.its stays in your head. i am french so thanks for copping with my englissh.

    thank you all loulou

Hi,went to Toronto hospital for the 3 months follow-up.Scan done, meet with surgeon for my hernia, surgery will be in 3 months, wait wait.
what can you do,have to wait for my turn. Then, see my doctor ,talk about my infections and antibiotics,he said I should irrigate my neo bladder but nobody showed me how to do this yet, they did show me how to catheter but not irrigate,I did it when I had my surgery but not since.its not the same as i was doing.Don’t know why they did not showed me the same time as catheter.I could not get that appointment until Friday so I found somebody else close to home to teach me.And my scan was the next day so I did not see my doctor after to get the results.
get me so anxious, you want to know but scarred like hell to hear the results.
and for the hernia, there is absolutly no garanteed that my neo will work properly after. But what ever, the important is that the scan shows nothing else..To repair the hernia the doctor will use a biologic mesh instead of a synthetic which is a very good new because it cost 5,000 dollars but I wont have to pay for this, when he surgeon think it is better for you,he said he prefered this one for my case because of the neo bladder.he said that the syntetic could damaged the neo.
Came back home last night, its a 5 hrs drive, went good ,no snow…..yet tomorrow will get that white stuff.
so it was a week of nerve wreck, still wait for results but hoping for the best,
thanks for your support and I will get better with my english

salutations to every one,and will get back to you with the results.

    loulou,

Sorry about the problem. It sure sounds like your doctor is likely correct.

I had hernias (a lot of them) along my incision. I needed a couple of surgeries to repair them. They did groups at a time.
I also lost my pushing capability during all of that and wasn’t draining fully. Not sure if it was related to the hernias though.

It does kind of make sense though.

I had a later complication that my neo got way overstretched when I was in the hospital for one of the hernia surgeries. They had a foley catheter in and it was clogged by the mucous of my neo. When I realized that I didn’t have any output in the catheter bag (originally I thought they must have emptied it but I checked with the nurses and found out they didn’t) I catheterized myself. I got over a 1000 cc’s.

I have to cath every time I go now. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to you. If they figure out where the hernia is that think is responsible for your problem, let me know. It might be worth me following up with my doctor to see about that too.

    Best of luck to you!
    Mike

Bonjour loulou, (Sorry but that is the extend of my French.)

Welcome to the forum. I am happy that you found us, and yes, you are not alone in your bladder cancer because there are many of us here.

Can you clarify your date of surgery? You posted that you had your neobladder done in October 2011, and it worked fine for 4 “months”. Did you mean 4 “weeks”, or is the date typed incorrectly?

I cannot answer your question about whether the hernia has interfered with your neobladder, but hernias seem to be a fairly common thing along the incision. My last CT scan showed that I have two small ones now and others here have had them and had them repaired. So sorry you have had these complications develop.

It probably depends on where your hernia is and how large it is whether that is what is causing the neobladder to not work as well now. Also there could be mucus that could be blocking the flow as well.

I hope that your doctor discovers what is causing your problem on Monday and that it is something that he can fix quickly. Other members will post here with their insights as well. Please let us know what your doctor says after your appointment.

    Best wishes… Catherine
