Can anyone guide me in what questions to ask my urologist about after care. Today was cystoscopy and he said it appeared “high grade”. Set up surgery tomorrow a.m. but I was so nervous I forgot to ask about whether I would be cathaterized or in pain or anything else. He said that he would be doing biopsy and taking the tumor tomorrow (at 7am)and that I may be a good candidate for a partial removal in the future. I am thinking that the pathology report will be the crucial determination of what is next. I am also thinking that “high grade” isn’t very optimistic. Help me think of what to ask him for getting through tomorrow and the next few days after that??? thank you all. Annie

    Annie,

Doug always has worn sweat pants and a loose top, just as Catherine advised. When he has had a catheter at home, he would put the bag in a pail to carry it around easier…and then if it leaks, it is safely in something.

Prayers will be with you tomorrow. Hope all goes well.

    Catherine,

I’m stickin’ with your advice! I wasn’t sure if the guys were joshing or not. Thanks for the well wishes. I can’t wait to wake up after the TURBT and still be alive. There’s a new day and a new experience a calling….
    Talk to you soon.

    OK you guys…

Annie… I wore a comfy shirt and some loose sweats. I had a leg bag that has velcro straps to hold it around the calf and ankle. It was quite simple to use.

And, contrary to what Diesel advised (not sure how he knows that), but I did find that wearing underwear helped hold the tubing in place better and was more comfortable. Something not too tight though. That would be personal preference and you’ll find what works for you.

It’s more fun for the other patients if you just drag the catheter bag behind you on the floor. Extra hosing makes it all the more interesting. :D

    Good luck with the TURBT!

I feel okay by asking this possibly weird question…
What the heck should I wear to the hospital? It’s day surgery but I’ll have that cathater?
Should I wear a dress so It hangs, or does it get taped to my leg?
Are really baggy pants a good idea?

I’m impressed again at how many people get such quick action. Does it make a newbie wonder, “Is it THAT BAD to go so fast?” My first go round resulted in the cath-bag system for 10 days (male), quite a surprise. Getting started is good, and yes, it should help determine future activity. It may also determine your need for a second opinion of the findings. Good luck, and welcome to this crazy club.

Girl, you are on the ball. Now you need to sit back, relaxe, clear your mind, and do something fun tonight. :)

You’re already ahead of the game, then. You’ll be fine. Let us know how you’re doing when you feel up to it.

Thanks very much. I already picked up meds: USTELL capsules (for spasms I think) and Cipro and Hydrocodone.
I have written down 4 things that you guys have brought up so again, thank you.

One more thing… I can’t remember if I had anything for bladder spasms for the TURBT or if that was after my later surgery. You might ask him if he thinks you might need something. That’s because your bladder tries to contract like normal to empty but everything is going into the catheter tube which seems to sometimes make the bladder cranky. It was just a brief uncomfortable feeling for me but can be avoided with the meds.

You will need someone to drive you home. They are normally very clear on what you need to do with your discharge instructions.

I am assuming if it was anything like mine that it shouldn’t be painful because you will be under anesthesia.

You will wake up with a catheter which should not be too uncomfortable. Ask him if he will do an instillation (through the catheter) of mytomycin-C afterwards which is pretty routine now. That is basically a bladder wash of a chemo solution to kill any little tumor seeds that might have escaped. It doesn’t get into your bloodstream so no after effects.

After that it will be a matter of waiting for your path report because that will be how your treatment options will determined.

I went home with the catheter, took it easy the rest of the evening and went back the next morning at 10 at which time the catheter was removed. I felt fine after that, was out running light errands later in the day.

    Will be thinking of you…
