  • Had RC and Prostate Removal Surgery April 30th.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I had the RC and prostate removal surgery on April 30 at The Cleveland Clinic. I ended up choosing the Ileal Conduit urinary divrsion.

I was in surgery 10 hours and required three units of blood, but the surgery showed the cancer had NOT spread into the muscle layer of the bladder and was NOT in the prostate. Dr. Brian Lane removed 40 lymph nodes and we will have the pathology report this Friday. I pray they are all cancer free and Dr. Lane is inclined to agree that they are…

I was discharged from The Clevelnad Clinic on Monday night so I was only in the hospitl for four days after surgery. So far I am getting a little stronger each day and am only taking Vicodin for pain. Most of my pain in in my lower back for some reason. How long before you begin to feel “like yourself again”…..

Thank you for all the help and encouragement,

    Blnmakerr

It took me longer due to wounds not healing. But I finally got normalized after 6 months R/C (04/28/2008). I have an ilial conduit. It has still taken me a few more months to feel 100%. I have been in the pool a few times and no problems. I have one of those rubber corsets you can find online, and that works great, keeps everything from floating around and looks better. I’m 65 and pretty much a couch potato, so maybe that is why things have taken longer to come around. But my recent scan was clear, and am hoping everything stays this way.

Hi There! I just wanted to throw my best wishes your way. I hope you have a speedy return to normal. Just realize that every day is a blessing and it WILL come around in its own time.
Walking is a great way to ease back in to life and you get a chance to think.
Also, my caregiver would like me to give you a little heads up about the stress your caregiver is going through. My wife was under more stress than I was. So make sure you allow your caregiver in (don’t push them away or try to tough it out without realizing the true team effort involved)
As I was able to gleen from your other pre surgery post. You are definitly a twisted human being with a great sense of humor. KEEP IT UP! As for normal….You will probably NEVER be normal……Thank God!:S

    Blnmakerr,
Great to hear that you had a short stay.
I had my Illeal Conduit created in June 2007.
What helped me with the healing and getting back to normal was walking often (sometimes 10 times a day for 15 minutes each time).
It took me a little time to find the right pouch that fits my body type. I had to try several models before I found the one that worked for me.
One of the hardest adjustments was trying to sleep with the bag. I connect to a night bag that has a 4 foot tube that connects to my urostomy bag.

Today I am doing everything that I did before surgery. I swim, bike and run (I ran 12 miles last Saturday).

    Good luck on your recovery.

    Rick

I was pretty much back to normal after 6 weeks with my illeal conduit. My surgery took 10 hours too but it was done robotically. You need to walk as much as possible to get your strength back.

Thats great that you’re out so soon…as soon as they hear those gas rumbles they pretty much kick you out!! That was a very long surgery for an ileal conduit. But you should recover pretty quickly as not as much bowel is cut for that procedure…yet give yourself 6 to 8 weeks of taking it easy.
I took a heck of a lot longer but i also had some complications.
    Glad you’re back………Pat
