Time magazine had a great article in the January 2010 issue that talked about our “Epigenetics”

It talked about the fact that we may not do anything to develop a cancer, but our parents may have and therefore passed that down to us in our genes.

When I read the post from Pemquid and her father, it made me think of the article and I will need to pull that back out again.

Title is: Why genes aren’t destiny. Summary says that the new field of epigenetics is showing how your environment and your choices can influence your genetic code–and then that of your kids.

My dad had bladder cancer, but he was an older male smoker (typical profile); I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at a younger age than he had been, and I’ve never smoked but was exposed to a lot of second-hand smoke growing up with 2 smoking parents in a small NYC apartment. Dad lived to be 84 and died of lung cancer unrelated to the bladder cancer (though of course smoking was a common denominator in both).

Ok this one will throw you…. not all familial breast cancer is inherited. In fact, inherited genetic mutations may contribute to only 5% to 10% of all breast cancers….which leaves 90% wondering why the heck we got it!!..If you are in the 5 to l0% with those mutations that they can screen for you’re probably going to get it early. I did read that a mutation of the P53 gene may contribute and thats a factor also in bladder cancer….????????? Many questions..no answers..

My brother is fighting bladder cancer now for three years. I was DX in January of this year with BC. My doctors all say there is no relation and are not even interested in know the type of BC he has.

I can not help but believe there is a relationship. Also my grandson is seeing a urologists this week due to blood in his urine. He has no pain or infection–just blood.

Had an uncle with it from my Mom’s side. I do believe there is at least a tendency for causation. Sad thing is no on is studying this issue according to my URO.
