  • Diet to offset BCG side effects

I am newly diagnosed and will be starting BCG the 22nd of this month. I had my first TURBT in Sept. and my second TURBT in October. Two tumors, my pathology report said HIGH GRADE UROTHELIAL CARCINOMA, TUMOR INVADES INTO LAMINA PROPRIA/SUBMUCOSAL TISSUE. NO INVASION OF MUSCULARIS PROPRIA. So I believe I am a T1 HIGH GRADE. Second pathology report came back clean of cancer cell being present.
After reading about the side effects of BCG on this site, I was curious if there is any special diet that would help offset the side effects of the BCG, and improve the chances of the cancer not returning.

I still drink decaf. Like most things in life I am sure moderation is the key. Even carbonated soft drinks. After I quit those however, I don’t miss them.

Thanks Nancy. I agree eating healthy has to be a good idea, am happy that coffee (maybe decaf) will still be ok

    Hi Bob,
As everyone said, there really isn’t anything you have to stay away from. I did stay away from caffeine, just because of the sensitive bladder.
I did try to eat extra healthy. Lots of Vit. A fruit and vegies, broccoli (I still eat at least a cup and 1/2 a week)I still eat healthy, but put a little more effort into high vit. foods.
    Good luck

    Bob,

I am not aware of any special diet to help on BCG side affects. However, I took carbonated soft drinks out of my habits. Have no clue if it helps or not. Most of us have seena dirty penny get “clean” after a soda bath! Also, I can’t find the reference but, somewhere I have read by Dr. Lamm or someone else has observed fewer reoccurences with patients deleting soft drinks.
Drink lots of water after the 2 hour or near to 2 hour hold during treatment.

Thanks Sara, I think what you said is true. I guess I am just trying to figure a way to ease my way through this.

Your bladder is going to be a little bit “irritated” after the BCG treatments, so I would hold off hot chili peppers for a couple of days.

As I have said before (and the old timers here are probably tired of hearing it) the time when we should have been cognizant of what we were eating (if indeed it has an effect) would have been about 20-30 years ago, when whatever damage to our DNA was being done. That said, it never hurts to eat, in general, a healthy diet with the requisite fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
