Ok I know you all hate this but I have had to reuse for the last 40 days. I was told by Dr steinbergs nurse to wash inside and outside of cath with antibacterial soap and place catheter wet in ziplock bag. (i would use this within 2 1/2 hrs. I did this at first but got infections so looked online at Childrens Hosp and now I wash with antibacterial soap inside and out and then let dry for 24-48 hrs in a fan folded towel then I submerge in 70% alcohol for 5 minutes and then place in ziplock bags wet and use within 7 days ( I rinse off the alcohol before cathing) Does this sound OK or should I boil them??? I will no longer have to reuse after Jan 25 because I had Dr Steinberg write me a new prescription. (IM STILL CATHING every 2 1/2 hrs during the day and sometimes 3 at night) Please let me know how you all cleaned yours in the old days!!!

I know this may sound weird but Jim’s “stoma” which isn’t like most stomas doesn’t have the rose bud. He just has what appears to be a second navel. It works so we don’t complain and his surgeon doesn’t feel it’s an issue. But since the first few inches of his “stoma” are fistula like and can close if not reminded not to gets cathed every other day and uses the balloon part along the way. What can I tell ya but this isn’t like any other stoma. So, the home health nurse when she was still coming told us to clean the caths very well and then go ahead and place it in vinegar h2o mixture for about 4 hrs. It’s just leave it in the vinegar mixture and rinsed well prior to use. I know those with a pouch have to cath periodically during the day but with Jim having an urostomy pouch that’s not the case, he just drains the bag. So far no infections so I imagine the nurse was correct. But, if M’care will cover we may ask the dr next week for an Rx for at least a few each month with Jim’s order.

I would use hot water and antibacterial soap, hang it over a towel bar, and let it air dry.
Stored in a quart size, zip lock bag.
I have been approved for more, so now they get tossed, along with UTI’s is hope.

good to hear pat that mucus may lessen in a month or so. I had to go to a 16 fr red rubber bard with staggered LARGE EYES to even get the mucus out.(these were incredibly hard to find but will work for anyone with LOTS of mucus BARD #056116. You had given me the tip on the bandaid and gauze and I used this until I started leaking so much now I use a Always pantyliner adhered to the inside of my underwear and change every few hours. I hope to go back to the bandaid and gauze one day. You guys are great!! I sure would feel unsure and alone without you all.

it does leak more in the beginning due to the amount of mucus its still producing. I used to use those gauze pads and put them over the stoma with a bandaid or paper tape. I found that while i was cathing if i gave a big cough sometimes a Huge amount of mucus would fly out..so give that a try. It will calm down at about the 3 month mark with the thick stuff or should.

    thanks Mike
I will only have to do this for a month but its good info to have incase insurance goes heywire in the future. My pouch is still acting up it erupts mucus and urine if I go up to 3 hrs. I have tried flushing,
drink less, drink more, make sure to cath well. This lady is ornery!!! I think the valve may not be working since my stoma always is leaking drip drip drip. Dr S says give it time so I am but I bet the valve is not working right. Hey at least Im alive and I have learned to adapt to leaks and eruptions with diapers guards

I just wash my in the sink with whatever soap is available in whatever restroom I am in.

However, if the catheter touches any part of the sink in a public restroom when I am using them, I throw it away. I’m pretty good at not letting it touch anything. I put mine in a plastic ziplock baggie and keep it in my pocket.

I reuse mine for a week. My insurance doesn’t cover them.

In my house, I hang them to dry and leave them out for my use.

Whats with your pouch? Are you drinking an inordinate amount of fluids? You should be at 3 to 4 hrs by now. Tell Tinklebell to start behaving right now.
contact Allegro Medical supplies and ask them for some samples of 14″ French 16long intermittent caths……they’re very helpful.

I still have to cath every 2 1/2 hrs and that is #288 catheters a month. I had a script for 200 a month and Have been fighting with insurance to cover this new amount. They DID ok the new amount a few days ago but I have to wait until Jan 25 to place order.(Insurance issues)
So I want the safest way to reuse till jan 25. I did call some cath suppliers so I will see what they send that will help some.

WHY are you reusing catheters when Medicare will allow you 200 a month? My script is written for a year and then renewed every year…..never been a problem.
read this…….there is no guarantee if you reuse
