Choice of Hospital/Physician
Posted by bmathews9744 on June 22, 2010 at 3:26 pmI am trying to decide if I should go back to MD Anderson where I went for my second opinion or go to John Hopkins. In reading the messages I see where many good things are said regarding Dr. Mark Schoenberg. John Hokins is where my second surgery pathology was read confirming CIS in several locations in the bladder.
If it comes to me having my bladder removed I want to be prepared with the best resources available. Just looking ahead!!!
Thanks for any feed back—

Brenda, really the ileal is the easiest to do so if Vandebilt is closer and thats what you want also consider Dr. Chang

Pat, you are my angel and I appreciate everyone so much. I will research the physicians you mentioned before making an appointment. Vanderbilt is closer for me, however I will go where ever I will be best taken care of.
After working for physicians for over thirty years I do understand they are not all the same.
FYI: I am helping with the July 17th Bladder Cancer Awareness Day event at Lake Lanier in Georgia. Wish you would be there.

Brenda..you’re talking about the ileal conduit which is the easiest of the surgeries. The Indiana is the most complicated and i would go an entirely different route in choosing that surgeon as you want one who is female friendly and really knows what he’s doing. I’ve really researched those guys. I think the best in the country is Dr. Inderbir Gill, Dr. Sia Daneshmand at USC/Norris…any of the Uro’s at Indiana University where they invented the pouch…Birhle or Koch…..and theres a new doc at Vanderbilt Dr. Dmochovsky, Dr. Machele Donat at MSK in NYC.
Anyway its a very individual decision and we all have our reasons for wanting one over the other and we all adapt to whatever as long as you’ve got a Top Surgeon.

Do you have Dr. Schoenberg’s nurses email address? I must have the wrong address because it will not go–[email protected] is what I have. I also left a message regarding an appointment. I have seen Dr. Grossman at MDA and I am not sure he is the one for me.

Brenda I see Dr. Schoenberg at Hopkins and he is great. I still have my bladder and had focal CIS in 04/08. Today was my 17th BCG treatment as so far the cancer has not returned.
Let me know if you need any further information

Brenda,
This link was originally from Mike or Pat so I bookmarked it. It covers pretty well the different diversions. Don’t intend to add confusion but, it will give you all the terminology. http://my.clevelandclinic.org/services/urinary_reconstruction_and_diversion/hic_urinary_reconstruction_and_diversion.aspx

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.Pat, I am not sure of the name, however I do know you have a stoma that empties into a bag on the outside. I met a lady that has one and after talking with her and doing some research on my own—I think this is the best way for me to go should I need a RC. I am 65 years old and of course will listen to any recommendations.
Thanks for your help as always

GuestJune 22, 2010 at 5:52 pmBrenda, they are both top institutions. A lot depends on what kind of diversion you want if you do have a cystectomy. Some surgeons have a definate opinion on what they want to put in. But they should explain all 3 to you and you should have a say.
