  • BCG “Controversy”

I have previously posted that my uro said that there is some controversy about the efficacy of maintenance BCG treatment, and that I would report back to you on the results of a subsequent discussion with him about that subject. Well, it seems I misunderstood what he said. He knows that maintenance BCG is effective, but, apparently, there is some controversy regarding the optimal maintenance schedule. While many follow Dr. Lamm’s recommended routine, others use monthly dosages over varying periods of time. One prominent local urologist (recently retired) always administered monthly instillations for one year and believed that approach to be most effective. As we know from various postings in this forum, there are several different schedules being employed by urologists. So, there seems to be no general agreement about how best to approach maintenance BCG treatment, other than it should be conducted. My uro tries to tailor the schedule to what he believes to be the best approach for the individual patient. He said he’ll have a recommendation for me after my next cysto. Anyway, that’s the “controversy.”

    Hi Don

I am on monthly BCG treatments. My URO asked that I do a treatment every 4 weeks for a total of 12 treatments. He will do a cyso 9 weeks after my last treatment. Then we will discuss a new plan of action, assuming I am cancer free.
I am aware of 3 other Uro’s in the area that also practice this type of monthly BCG maintenance.
