bcg and kidney swelling
hi,
i have a question. my dad just finished his 6 weeks of bcg treatment. he had one tumor that was removed in november (it was by the entrance to his ureter) after that sugery he had a stent placed in his ureter due to the fact the tumor blocked the ureter and caused his kidney to swell. he had the stint removed a month later. he has been fine until last night when he had pain again. he had an ultrasound of kidneys and bladder that did not show any tumors or growths, just that hid kidney was swollen. the nurse from my dads urologist called today, he will go into the office on tuesday to have a stent placed. this scares me because my dad has been doing well, there was no cancer left after his surgery (he was t1 g2-3)could the bcg treatment have caused this? has anyone had any similiar situation? thanks.

thought i would give an update. my dad spoke with the doctor today. the swelling of his kidney is due to scar tissue by his surgery site (which was at the entrance to one of his ureters) he will have a stent placed tuesday and i beleive the doctor may open up further the entrance to his ureter. i was not sure before if the bcg treatment could have caused uereteral stricture (from what i researched this is a side effect of bcg although not as common as other side effects). he had his last bcg treatment last week and it caused my dad to pass alot of debris. otherwise my dad is doing good. thanks for anyone reading this.

not sure an ultrasound would be a definative test for recurrance..but if they’re going to put in a stent they are going to be looking at the bladder and surrounding area so that should be definative. Pat

I did a search on the forum here and found the following. I think that this poster is talking about a problem of Post RC swelling and this is not speaking to a condition as a result of BCG treatments.. I hope this helps in some way…
Follow up’s with the Doc’s have been remarkably few, in comparison to the pace of 3 mo’s cysto’s BCG and all that I was doing pre-surgery. They were watching
my left kidney closely starting at 3 mo’s post op, as an ultra sound had shown some dilation of the left kidney which was identified as resulting from a slight
swelling of the left ureter as it entered the neobladder, and the scar tissue was creating a constriction. We took a watch and wait approach, and it seems to have resolved itself so far. I am now on a 6 mo’s follow up with both Urologist/ Surgeon, and Oncologist.You can find the original post here…

This is from the front page of the Bladder Cancer Web Cafe… I learned a lot about hydronephrosis while I was googling around for some background on BCG and hydronephrosis. I’m not sure how to answer your question about it. This was not a reaction that I had, but it sounds like (from my googles) that it is not unheard of….
From my googles, its seems that “hydronephrosis” is also the correct term for kidney swelling….
hydronephrosis – Swelling of the top of the ureter, usually because something is blocking the urine from flowing into or out of the bladder; a condition that occurs as a result of urine accumulation in the upper urinary tract
It is interesting to me that a lot of tumors appear outside of the ureter orifice. That’s also where my Doctor found my tumor….
Good luck. I hope someone has some more information for you. This is the first that I have heard of this BCG reaction since I began reading posts here over 2 years ago….
