  • Anyone on blood thinners????? Experience with TURBT?

Hello all. My dad is scheduled for his TURBT on Dec 3 to remove a small, superficial spot in his bladder. He’s on Coumadin for Afib and has to have clearance to stop the Coumadin for about 5 days prior to the surgery. This makes me nervous! He will then restart the night of his surgery. His urologist said he would be at risk for bleeding and we will need to watch for clots. I’m worried to say the least. Anyone have experience with this????

Jessica, I have not had experience with coumadin or similar with bladder cancer biopsies, but have with other more invasive surgeries. It is standard procedure to take the patient off blood thinners (even aspirin) prior to anything that could bleed. Your father’s physicians are aware of the issue and will act and advise accordingly. It should not cause problems.
