Am I doing the best?
Posted by quinlanm on October 6, 2011 at 6:02 pmmy husband is 39 and has stage 4 BC. We go to Texaas Oncology for chemo and Urology Assoc of North Texas. I noticed how many times MD Anderson is recommended on here. It makes me concerned that I should get my husband into MD Anderson. He does seem to be responding well to the chemo MVAC. He is starting his 3rd round. The first week of Novemeber, he will be scanned to see if the METs have been removed from his bones and lungs.Initially, I considered MD Anderson, but his cancer is very aggressive and we didn’t have time to wait to get into MD Anderson. What should I know?

I’m sorry you are going through this. You are too young to be dealing with this. Glad you got into MD Anderson. They will treat you well!

We, too, met with a surgeon at UANT. Who was it? We saw Shepherd.

I went to MD A for a second opinion. I am having everything done there. I am in deep south Texas and there isn’t anything close by with MD A’s know how and technical expertise. I have received nothing but the best from them. My cancer however will not co-operate. After 4 TURBTs and a round of BCG, I am having a radical cystectomy on Jan. 17th. I am glad I am going there to have this done. Your husband and I are far too young for this stuff. I was diagnosed at 36. I hope all is going as well as possible for your family.

@ 36, DX: 03/2011, T1HG, TCC/CIS, BCG (Didn’t work) NeoBladder Sched: 01/2012,I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and my Dad has been treated at both the places you mentioned. He currently has a urologist at UANT who I don’t like at all! He also received excellent treatment for complications after his RC surgery by a great bladder cancer surgeon at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Dr. Ganesh Raj. UTSW is closer than Houston for you, most likely, and a great place to be treated for bladder cancer. My Dad had his RC surgery at Baylor All Saints in Ft. Worth and I wish he had gone to UTSW instead! If MD Anderson had taken Dad’s insurance, we would have gone there but no such luck.
We tried to go to MD Anderson and were told that we had to finish this current treatment.I guess when we finish this treatment (this month) and we get the scan back, we can try again and hope like crazy that it’s not a 3 month wait to get in.
I went there after being treated elsewhere and they had no problem seeing me. I opted to go elsewhere but it was my choice, not their (MD Anderson) choice.

My opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of ABLCS or anyone else. I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember that when we tried to get my Dad into MD Anderson, we were told they couldn’t take a patient who had begun treatment somewhere else.
GuestOctober 7, 2011 at 3:59 amits sounds like they’re hitting him heavy duty right now but i would contact MD Anderson and maybe get a second opinion as you may need some options later at some point and they’ve got all the trials and access to newer protocols. I would maybe think about contacting Dr. Kamat
